The thing is, generally farmers haven't bought them for years, the Mitsubishi L200 pickup is more popular!
I'd say it's 50:50 with farmers, but I see a lot more Land Rovers than L200's in the Lake District, a lot more.

Like Andy K, I too was put off by a first drive of an old 1970’s Landie. But that was in my teens. It was slow and uncomfortable. It didn’t last long in our collection back then.

Fast forward 30+ years and my daily is a 2013 Defender 110XS with the 2.2 turbo transit puma engine. It cost me c.£25k and after 40k miles it’s worth about the same. It’s no slower than most modern “normal “ cars here in Wales. Most journeys are under 100 miles, but I’ve taken 4 passengers to Dublin without complaint.

I think it’s the closest you can get to driving a classic car with modern reliability, without going down the very expensive re-imagined route (Singer Porsche etc). The shape and ability makes it acceptable in most circumstances. We went to a wedding this year where they had a VIP parking area just for Landrovers.

As a bonus, it pulls my Riva on its trailer with ease. It pulled the Jewson lorry out of a ditch. Its poor weather abilities mean I can rescue the boys at work if they get snowed in. I really can’t think of anything to replace it with.

The guy who sorted out my Hurricane’s engine block used to work at Landrover in the seventies and as a young apprentice he got to drive them round the banked oval test without bodies on. He reckoned that no-one could turn them over.

To cap it all, one of my best pals has bought a series 2 as a beach buggy in France and it’s just perfect for what he needs. Subtly upgraded on the mechanical side, Mandy, his Sandy Landie is just perfect for the job.

On one of the land rover forums a guy went in to his local dealer for parts, the counter was in the showroom so he went and had a sit in one of the blinged up 50k Defender 90s

He said it was reassuring that JLR hadn't lost its core values because with the door shut he could see light through the bottom same as his 25 year old one

The sales guy asked me how many acres I owned. I said seven. He said you’ll just about turn it around then. He wasn’t far wrong. He also said he couldn’t believe they were still selling vehicles held together with pop rivets. Glad it didn’t put me off though.

The ones to watch are early Discos.
Mint uncorroded unabused ones are hen’s teeth. Do nothing for me but already starting to appreciate. Some are being imported from Japan.

When I was MOT testing used to hate having to do one of those because of all the mess it would leave on the lift and floor.
Not only rust but the oil leaks.

shame LR never thought about galvanised chassis from the factory, you can buy aftermarket galvanised chassis for not a lot of money, the chassis always seemed to rust very early on, especially all the outriggers and rear sections

I cant think of any other suv/car that can legally carry 12 adult people, remember taking a hoard of my daughters friends years ago to local parties on several occasions many years ago, having 10 screaming/yapping teenagers in the motor was a bit of a laugh

Land Rovers are one of the few totally classless cars, they are welcome anyway. A nicely sorted transit engined 90 or 110 is not bad car, no sports car but relatively comfortable, rugged and will go anywhere it's just the fact of how expensive they are putting me off getting one over here.

Don't shoot me down but on the theme of *** Imports there are some nice Range Rovers especially P38 coming from over there top spec and as new having had two I would have another.

The series 1s had a galvanised chassis, that’s why you don’t see replacements for sale.

It’s turning that way too.

I’ve driven enough of them. Defender has some charm, I’d rather have a G though...

Friend of mine bought his wife a 50th anniversary model 90 V8 auto in blue (for her 50th) got it used about 14 years ago - almost doubled its money from what they paid and she uses it as a daily -

I love the sound of a V8 landy

I wonder why they didn't put the Ranger 5 cyl diesel instead of the Transit motor could have had 200 BHP ;)

I used to drive a 90 when I was at Bournemouth Airport, my predecessor in my final role there drove round in a VW Tourag but I found it soulless. The White Landie had wayward steering, 60mph was the most I could do on the runway or dare to do. This was mainly down to the gearing. In a previous life it was raised to fit snow clearing equipment at Manchester. But it could go anywhere. The firemen used it to teach off road driving and it would go through the bondhu to the North of the airport with ease. It one thing I miss about that job.
Now I have a L200 that beeps at me for not putting my seat belt on or if I drift over a white line without indicating. Annoying!

60052My series 3, used for tootling down back roads, going to dump and Greenlaning in Donegal. Also very useful in the snow. Really fun to drive; just in a different way.
