I have had a knocking when i go over manholes etc. and had the front left roll bar link changed which improved the issue but there was still some slight knocking that seems to be getting worse. Any ideas on common issues with QP5 2009 ?

thx

Knocking when going over bumps is normally drop links (anti roll bar links).

Maybe the other side needs replacing? As a general rule you should change both at the same time as the wear at the same rate.

I can't believe how chatty the underside on my car is even when the garage tells me nothing is wrong. Presume the QP5 is the same?

Thx Mark Is it just the links that should be replaced or are there other parts...

From my experience it will be the wishbone bushes.

They are a known weak point on the GT. Fortunately mine were replaced before I bought the car.
And it's not a cheap fix. The invoice on mine was for just over £1200.

You tend to change the whole lot, top & bottom, both sides and you can buy a bush kit containing all of them. They should be good for 40k or so miles

Hi Keano

Knocking noises can be one or all(!) of the following:

1. Suspension bushes (upper and lower, inner and outer) front - easily identified
2. Rear suspension bushes - easily identified
3. Track rods - easily identified
4. Inner tie rods (inside of the bellows attached to the steering rack) - need to check for excessive free play and knocking
5. Suspension assembly - easily identified
6. Sway bar bushings - easily identified
7. Engine mounts - little more involved but not hard too diagnose

If you have a tech look at it systematically, no more than 30 mins, you should be able to get there by deduction. And given the bushings work you have had done hopefully easier to deduce

good luck

I had similar knocking sounds in my 2007 QP, which were difficult to trace. After new front bushes and drop-links had been installed, the knocking continued. Main dealer (GP) during a service and health check diagnosed low engine mounts and rear subframe mounts - needles to say at vast cost to replace. I was rightly sceptical and my local independent (Migliore) replaced the anti-roll (sway) bar bushes at modest cost. All knocking is now gone. The roll-bar bushes are only about a tenner and modest labour to fit them. It is quite hard to tell if they are worn until you get them off.

If your knocking is particularly noticeable when only one front wheel is going over a manhole or small pothole/rough road and not the other wheel, then from my experience I would suggest trying the roll-bar bushes.

Update - My local indy successfully replaced the front left bushes using a kit from EuroSpares. Tricky to get them off and one of them fell to pieces when it came out but new ones are in and problem solved £300 for the bushes and £240 for labour - much better option than replacing all the left side @ £1600 with dealer.

Endorse this. Just had an anti roll bar bush and matching drop link replaced by my local garage. Not expensive and the knocking noise is all gone.

Spot on.
Had same issue on my QP 4.7 and replaced the front drop links myself.
No annoying knocking any more

Indeed. It was such an easy and inexpensive fix - my garage showed me the play in the bush - that has to be a first port of call. Remember that an MOT will not pick it up, at the front anyway, due to the undertray.

Hi Keano, I have the same problem on my Quattroporte?
Can you share details of your local indy, please?

Cheers, Marc.
