They can be a little more reluctant into second when cold....
I drove your car and thought it was sticky. The one I bought was the same. The mech is offset, under the gearbox, and completely open to the elements on the rear axle. Making sure the mech is regularly serviced and lubricated will transform your car....!

;)

Mine shifts a bit awkward between second and third and it does not like going into secomd when cold either.

I'd like to service this mechanism but not entirely sure how. I have spotted it under the car in passing before and I agree it is very exposed to the elements. Anyone fancy doing a DIY?

I`m going to get mine up on a ramp soon to have a good poke about, I shall have a look at the gear selector mechanism and give it a lube up :)

I had the same problem with a 2006 MX5 a few years ago, second gear was very stiff (6 speed manual) I change to a different type of gearbox oil which helped a bit.

I think its just a characteristic of these Maserati gear boxes, apparently the gear selector cables for these gearboxes are no longer available either ?

Second gear is a bit tight on all the manual 42's. Nothing to worry about.
If you haven't already seen it then I suggest you watch David Cironi driving a manual 42 on YouTube.......... By the way, welcome!!

If notchy when cold but fine when warm then; “they all do that sir....” and I wouldn’t worry.

Yep, TADTS.
Mine is a 2004 GT with notchy 2nd when cold too. Welcome to the fold, as others have said, great to see another manual car getting some love.

I think mine is fine into second, cold or not. As long as you’re gentle & not in a hurry....
I still make a hash of gear changes from time to time...it’s operator error, usually trying too hard. And some unfamiliarity....
The gearbox was worlds better after a mech service, which is really the point. So much so, I was convinced it must have had cable adjustment. Not so, looking at the invoice. (NB. box oil was also changed)

:)

Likewise mine is also notchy 1st to 2nd to start with but after a while it gets smoother.

Dont worry the cables can be made up quite easily by the right suppliers.

Welcome to this great forum .
My 4200 GT , 2002 , manual model is a bit notchy when cold too , always got to press the clutch right to the stop to get a nice change .
My motor also ticks over at 1000rpm , I guess it must be normal .
Re the fuse door under the passenger side carpet , has anyone trimmed a bit off so it opens withought hitting the dash or is it supposed to do that ?

"Is it supposed to do that?"
well....sort of.:)
Its a bit mickey mouse . I assume they are all the same. Mine certainly wont clear the dash...(4200GT Coupe)
I dont recommend cutting it. There is a 1/4 turn fixing on the top left corner, so you'd end up losing that !
My car is 12 years old. It didnt look like it had ever been opened...
Maserati are a bit hopeful given their record with electrics but better be careful what I say...!! :p

On the subject of electrics is the 4200 "fly by wire" throttle the same sort of system as on the 3200 which has an issue with the carbon track wearing out ?

Just wondering if this is something I would have to keep an eye on on my 4200 in the future.
