Just saw this on Twitter - don't think it would get past the planners in the UK: https://www.dezeen.com/2020/01/15/fujiwaramuro-architects-house-takamatsu-japan-architecture/

"The client requested that the building occupy as much of the lot as possible, ensure privacy, have a built-in garage that showcased their car, and have a reinforced concrete structure with simple finishes rather than textured interiors featuring wood and other materials."

Looks like a operating theater inside... not very homely... but I do like the garage and man cave idea.

I could do something similar but my garage not only shares a wall with the lounge but the guest bedroom, might be a bit of a privacy issue...

Cold and minimalistic.
Shame about the house....That's horrid. House should be homely that is not.
I don't mind minimal - we lived in something quite minimal for some of the time when we were in Tokyo and enjoyed the experience. Helped that I went out there with only very little stuff (but of course came back with most of a container-full). Managed to rent it for a (relative) bargain price as it wasn't child-friendly in the slightest and most people had that requirement. Our cats eventually got used to the spiral staircase...

Not being able to look upon a view beyond the walls. That, and the lack of natural light kills it for me....

I like minimalism. If I was single I'd have very little. With 2 kids if I lived here it would soon be trashed though. The man cave has some potential though.

It's funny. Mrs C was always something of a hoarder. I like to keep things neat and simple.

I spent some considerable time and effort re-wiring our cinema last year, cables through the voids, in the loft, channeled into the walls and so on. You can see one cable if you look and 6 inches of cable from the roof into the projector.

Now? It's her favourite room. She wants to use it every day. I don't think she quite makes the connection...

In most of Japan the "view beyond the walls" is the next house a few meters away across the road. It's pretty rare to find a standalone house in a location with any form of a view. Housing density there makes even the meanest of UK newbuild estates look generous.

That was my initial thought when looking at the pics at the top...
On looking at the photos in the link.. it looks better lit than my first impression. And the surroundings, however 'cheek by jowel' dont look as bad as I first suspected...
Id need to see out onto something. I'm not convinced proximity is the only issue.
Too much like a prison without...!!!

Id love to visit Japan one day. Very interesting and diverse country in so many ways...

Certainly well worth it.
I was there for the best part of 10 years through work. Even got married there (albeit to another Brit) and honeymooned around Japan.
