Is this the first fault on my QPV?

HI All

Had a wonderful first 3 months with the QPV but alas, I feel an expensive fix coming on - any advice greatly appreciated.

1) Rumbling/road noise
This has started in the last week. At any speed above 40 miles an hour and especially at 80, there is nasty road noise which sounds like a "whoa whoa whoa" coming from the rear. At first I thought it may be a wheel bearing? No difference whether under load or not. Does it even if you knock the car into neutral.
I took it to my local garage today (they are not MS specialist but really know their cars.) They checked all suspension, links, bushes, checked prop bushes and even checked the bearings - couldnt find anything. They did suggest that the tyres could be causing the issue? They are fairly worn and quite old (2017).
I had increased the pressures - they were reading around 25 PSI and I increased to 32 (I know the factory suggests 29). I have since put the pressures back down to 25 and things have improved a little bit but I am not at all happy.
Seems quite intrusive. If you put your hand on the rear seat you can feel some form of vibration coming through the rear.
The car is running Pirelli PZeros

2) Starting difficulties
On two occasions this week this happened when starting from cold. Usually the car fires and starts immediately. But yesterday and today on two occasions it has taken 2-3 seconds to start? No issue from warm but only on cold start. No engine management warning lights. Once it starts, runs perfectly.

Any help or advice would be great - Im quite handy with a spanner so am happy to roll my sleeves up if pointed in the right direction.

Cheers

If the tyres are worn, that would be where I'd start. You get new tyres, even if it doesn't solve the issue, which it sounds like you are in line for anyway

The starting sounds pretty OK from my memory, but sure some others will chime in.

Could be a suspension bushes, menu item on these cars.

Otherwise, the start up sounds normal too. Don't stress to much, these cars are so rewarding when they work right but remember they hate winter.

Agreed on both counts. If you have had the moving parts already looked at, the tyres are sounding like the guilty party to me

I had a similar noise on a Touran. Turned out to be saw-tooth tyre wear on the inside edge. Try feeling it, and maybe swap the rears if not directional. Or just replace them.

  1. She is having a strop because she is missing out on Michelin ps4s.
  2. Mine occasionally does the same. Never been an issue.

Just enjoy.

Welcome to Maserati ownership!

Because it's a Maserati and they take the p1ss with parts prices.....

The parts cost are all relative to the initial purchase price which makes them seem expensive against the current values in today's world.
When I bought my second 4200 back in 2014 for £5,000 and the water pump oil pump unit was over £1500 it makes you think.

You fix this and sooner or later something else will need attention. Emotionally should makes you feel nice because you end up with a better car than you started, the reverse of buying a brand new car which is in top shape on day 1 and can only get worst with use/time. It also turn you into long term owner (or investor!), as you won't be able to get quick recognition of the effort made.

I have never understood that Phil.....If the purchase price is say 90k why would a bearing or water pump be silly money......Its saying that because the original punters can pay 90k for a car they can of ford to pay double or more for parts and servicing........Its b0llocks and I still think it's taking the p1ss....

I agree to a point when the parts are mass produced and shared with several vehicles from the FCA family but for the low volume produced parts they will always be more expensive.
Example BMW Mercedes Benz bolt in hub wheel bearings £50 to £60 but loads of them on the roads a QPV not so many.

Now you know, in the grand scheme of things it could have been whole lot worst even with a gd car. My GTS recently cost £3k for service and cam cover gasket replacement.

Think of it as an initiation...Welcome to the club!
Eb
(ps had to replace both front bearings soon after purchace because of the "crappy" ABS sensor, not the bearings themselves so you have got off lighlty!)
