iPod connection question....

Hi, I know ipod connections have been discussed to death, but this is quite a specific question...

I'm using my old iPod classic (80gb) in my GTS (65 plate), the first attempt just using a USB failed completely, the system not even recognising iPod at all. Then did some reading and discovered it's quite a hit & miss subject dependent on many factors. Thought I'd try the split AUX/USB cable but, before forking out on the official Maserati one at a cost of £125 and not knowing 100% what functionality it would provide, decided to get a cheapo one off eBay for £6.50 as a trial.

This is the cable I've got....
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N8V88Q1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The system instantly recognised the iPod and plays it no problem BUT there is no controlling it via any buttons in the car nor is anything displayed on the screen.

If this is as good as it gets then I've saved about £120 but was wondering what the consensus was over the official cable - do you think it might provide the extra functionality or is it essentially an overpriced version of the cheapo cable I've got??

My car does have 'iPod Connection' ticked on the options list.

I feel your pain !

When I first got my GTS my ipod jukebox classic worked with full functionality. However it would regularly drop the ipod source so I would either need to reconnect ipod to the cable or keep toggling "source" until IPOD reappeared. Annoying but I could live with it.

Recently the head unit stopped seeing the IPOD Toggling "source" would only cycle from radio to CD player. No ipod, no Jukebox, no USB ? I tried another IPOD nano, no joy.

The ipod will work if I activate the AUX socket through the car menu but then I lose the functionality and need to control tracks on the ipod itself.

Then I tried to plug in a USB drive with MP3 files (fat32 format) , but nothing.

Tried using a BOVEE blue tooth connector but again I only got music but no control from the head unit or wheel controls.

At first I suspected the cable had gone faulty, but if that was the case why will the USB stick not play which bypasses the cable. ARRRRH.

You are welcome to try my OEM "y" cable. PM your address and I will pop it in the post.

If it works I am sure we can agree on some beer tokens.

You do exact same as me. Previous owner had bought a long Y cable and inlay iPod on centre console.

What I can tell you is if I use the proper set up I get a few songs recognised and these are the ones that are in MP3 format, it’s the apple AAC it doesn’t seem to like.

Proven by the fact if you stick MP3 songs on a stick it will recognise them

Very kind offer thank you. Let's see how this thread goes and then we'll speak. To be honest, I've not tinkered with it for long, but know it'll **** me right off if I do!!! Seems so many factors can affect things and even then it's temperamental!!!

...yeah, I'm picking up on that common theme. It's crazy really that a 3 year old car costing over £100k can't connect with the worlds most popular music player (admittedly the system is older).

All that said, I've hardly turned the radio on, let alone listened to my iPod, it gets in the way of the V8!!!

All you need to sort out is if you don’t have an X pipe yet it’s time to go shopping .....

I have the oem cable and it works great. Search function is a little cumbersome (no shortcuts) but readout is there and sound quality is great. I use the old school 160g iPod.

Oh, interesting to know. Popped into my local dealer today funnily enough, I need to pop back when the parts guy is there (he's the master of the iPod cables!!), as he'll be able to check various compatibility options. Seems there is hope (so long as all the planets align).

I have full fat USB on my 2009 car and tried older iPod and a touch and neither worked.

I also got a software update by dealer that came with OEM Y cable, told me it’d work, did bigger all and cost me about £140 I seem to remember. Took about 3 hours over the quoted 30 mins, got some good photos of the wife changing the bairns ****** nappies I’m the posh waiting area lol

I think that's more to do with the iPod than the cable...

Sounds a little needle in a haystack really - come be this - could be that - could be the other...

My local dealer has told me to pop in so their iPod-Whiz can take a look but fear that would be painful both in terms of frustration and ultimately cost.

There was a list somewhere of what iPods and software versions worked. It was somewhat Byzantine.

Problem: updated iTunes is no longer compatible with old school iPods. And Apple has stated that they will NOT be working on a fix. So, whatever music you have on the iPod is basically it...
