Indy values?

Looks like an Indy might be coming my way that's been in long term ownership. Have known about the car for two years and asked the owner to contact me if he ever wanted to sell. Got the call this morning and am going to see it this weekend. Where are Indy values going and what are current fair, good, exceptional values?

Good value compared to the Ghibli 1, but not as stylish.

If its been in long term dry storage it should be fine but expect it to cost more than it is worth in renovations if its got rust beyond surface rust.

Indy values have increased in the last few years and are probably between 40 and 80k depending on condition. As with all maserati cars it's worth having and inspection by Mcgrath, Emblem or Autoshield could do this and perhaps also advise on value.

Probably a bit difficult as Grant is in ZA, and I presume the car is too.

But it might be worth a phone call to any of these chaps. I'm sure they'll happily give you a few minutes of their time and might explain some important points to look out for.

Good luck with the purchase. That would be one for the stable.

Got to see the Indy over the weekend, but couldn't get to see the car in detail. It's parked in the back corner of a garage surrounded by other classics and there's no space to open the door to get in to open the bonnet.
The owner has had the car for ten years and four years ago there was an issue with the headlights - he started to investigate if it was the motors, or something mechanical, and then parked the car untouched.
Looks in good overall condition - can't tell if the paint is original or resprayed. Interior looks ok, but can't see through the layers of dust. Has no registration papers, but it is registered. Owner doesn't know if the books are there or not.
Price wise the owner wants the equivalent for a good running car, which this is not, so I've offered 20% less which is still a little on the high side. It's been left at that and if it comes my way, well so be it.

You feel in need of a new project?

No and I certainly don't need another car, but it's this car affliction that's rearing it's head again. My father overhauled the motor of an Indy for a customer when I was a boy and the sound the car made has always stayed with me. I desperately need a pill or therapy or something.

My Dad made me the Airfix version of the Indy in that gold colour. Ì can understand the temptation.
Like many Maserati models hasn't the Indy been behind the curve in terms of financial appreciation? You might be buying at the peak of the market.

Without hearing the old girl barking into life my gut feeling is this is a project, probably a biiiiiig project.

Good luck. I can see how heart over head might win :)

I adore these cars and in fact it was the first Maserati I drove. My mate had a bright orange one in Aberdeen and I had a shot heading north towards Elgin in the 90's. Fabulous sound but the clutch and gearbox was extremely heavy. A hairy chested mans car!

I think we've forgotten what heavy clutches were really like. I drove a friend's 308 recently and the first time I tried to depress the clutch pedal I honestly thought something must be blocking it; I couldn't believe the shove needed to move it.

I remember at the end of long journeys in my GTV6 I would be so tired from its heavy clutch and gear-change that I would start taking roundabouts in 4th.

Gearbox was optional in a GTV 6, that 12V V6 would pull from tickover in any gear especially if you had the 3.0 version that I had in my GTV 6 and in my SZ
