Parts arriving today, its a job I have been putting off for a year now.

The usual weeping down the back of the engine.

Before I embark, and do a full how to including the repainting of the cam covers with the VHT crackle finish red, has anyone got any pointers?

The question are, to use or not to use silicon and obviously not to drop anything into the engine.

Parts are:

198927 Cam Cover Gaskets x2
187706 Plug Sealing Rings x8
Cost from Meridien inc VAT and postage: £81.97

I may do plugs too as they have been in there 3 years/8k miles or should I not bother as the car runs perfectly?

Can anyone give me the correct plug numbers/confirm its: NGK R PMR8B and not those aftermarket Iridium ones I hear so much grief about.

Hi Matt, the correct plugs are NGK PMR8B as you've stated above. I done mine last month and double checked with Voicey before i did them, as i was going to do the Denso Iridium's but after messaging Voicey, decided to stick with the originals.

Maserati Parts (US supplier by that name) don't seem to exist any longer. I did get 4200 cam gaskets from MP a year or so ago and had to trim them to fit. Installed as delivered they would leak from day one.

Hi Matt, I've just had the Denso Iridium plugs fitted last month. What do you hear about them?

Also keen to see this thread as I too have the rear weeping, not a large amount but gets mentioned on service reports.

Basically they break down after a year or so and cause all sorts of misfire issues. I dont think they are very good, OEM only is the recommendation these days.

Manual for the Ghibli suggests some sealant where there are joins with other covers - ie front cam and rear cam covers.

Small dab of something - I used Hymolar blue

I did mine a couple of years ago, just a toil manoeuvring the covers out, remember to remove the C clips holding the variator wiring!
And it's a bit tricky ensuring the new gaskets stay in place when refitting the covers, you'll be fine! I would recommend gloves if you can work in them to protect your knuckles!
The oil leak used to make mine smell more than anything else, was quite annoying!

Is the crackle paint cheap/easy to come by? My covers need a little touch up in a couple of places.

In theory yes but you have to apply it right. I think you need to prep it thoroughly, I am going to chemically strip mine first, then sling them through the dishwasher (when the wife is out of course)

Then I belive you have to heat the item up first and apply the coats in the right amount and the right temperature, then maybe heat it again to make it wrinkle. There is a video somewhere, Ill look it out.

Thankfully I have a spare engine so I am going to redo the spare cam covers first then silicone the gasket to them and leave it overnight to cure and make sure there is no excess that can find its way into the engine.

Clean with brake cleaner and warm the item.

Mask any items not requiring paint.

Apply 3 thick coates 10 mins apart

Oven bake at 200 deg FARANHEIGHT or use a heat gun until it wrinkles.

Leave for 48hrs and finish
