Really interesting thread.......I hope this helps....

I wrote to the factory too a couple of years ago and I was really impressed with their speedy response and customer care. Maserati somehow (to me anyway) seemed to take a genuine interest in my car and releasing info on it. I had to send a copy of my registration of ownership i.e V5/ proof of ownership.

Within their reply they sent me a copy of the options list that my car had added/that were ordered when it was new, the colour scheme, wheel type, and it fortunately matched to what was already in the file. My interest in the 4200 came from wanting a manual (3pedal) front engined Italian GT that wasn't stratospheric price wise, that had the performance, handling and the charisma that others seemed to lack. Bingo! The Maser has it in spades!

Anyway within a couple of days the factory got back to me and confirmed the following......Maserati produced 1078 4200 manual GT Coupes (3 pedal kind) M138 for world wide markets. 214 cars were produced for UK RHD market. They also went on to confirm that 89 Coupe GT's /Spyders were face-lift models but didn't specify the breakdown of CC's/3pedal within the 89 face-lift cars.

Model year 2005 cars M138's i.e. the cars that came just before the replacement Gransport...

Those were 35 Coupe GT's and 89 CC's, 20 spyder CC's and 4 Spyder GT (3 pedal) which trickled through in 2005 via the Importer Maranello/Maserati GB.
World wide production 5371 CC's +1078(3 pedal) that would make 6449 units. So previous figures quoted are not far off. These are pretty, pretty rare and a delight to drive..

Welcome to the forum, and as an owner of a three pedal model, thanks for the information.

Thanks very much for the warm welcome. Stunning cars these 4200's, just brilliant, you get so much bang for your buck...So much car for so little when you look at their Italian cousins. They are such an accomplished car with a racing history that really is quite amazing, to me they are 95% of the performance for a fraction with just as much character. A real wolf in sheep's clothing! The more I and drive it and learn about it, the more I realise it's greater than the sum of it's parts....

From what I have researched so far and from what I understand, the 4200 Coupe and the Spyder M138's had some detail differences/revisions as the face-lift 89 final edition cars prior to the Gransport. The front bumper was slightly modified receiving slightly different intakes/chin spoiler. The front grill was enlarged with a slightly bigger trident badge, they also received venting/meshing at the lower elements of the rear bumper, some of those very late final cars also received the 19" Gransport rims but not all 89 facelifts got those.

The Trident badge in the rear flanks/butresses...This is where things are a little confusing/fuzzy. From what I understand these were standard on the face lift cars. Some say they were an option? Can anyone shed any light? I've seen facelift CC's and manuals without those....

The interior received an update too, the dash instrumentation was revised with different numerical scripting.
The centre console just behind the cambio-corsa panel or stick shift gear lever format, there the face-lifts received a smaller ashtray (losing the Maserati scripted badge) and gaining a cup holder. Nav-Teq remained the same through-out.

Cars through-out production could be ordered with a space saver wheel and the associated toolkit, jack and wheel studs. I've seen cars with this and the boot cover has a slight hump to accommodate this space saver wheel. Mostly though cars came with a Maserati supplied fix a flat type air pump (plug in to the cigar lighter socket type) and Latex cartridge with a flush/flat boot cover. It may also be that (although I'm not 100% sure) in some Markets it was obligatory to have a space saver wheel to satisfy local/country legislation hence some cars came with one as standard.

During it's production life 2002-2005/6 the options Maserati listed were cubby spaces under the rear seats, set of 5 piece fitted luggage, a set of Golf clubs, "Auditorium 200"watt sound system.

Maserati also marketed some sort of special "Personalisation" program, whereby a customer could bring a body colour sample of their choosing and specify it for their car and then combine it with other interior combinations.

Hope this is of use.

What a lovely thing to have though !
They also did a "Vintage package". Polished silver facelift rims with colour coded calipers. Chrome door handles and air-exhaust vents in the wings....

On my manual Spyder I have the optional carbon fibre pack for the interior.. This comprises carbon fibre door fillets, steering wheel and gear knob. I've not seen another Spyder with this option (which apparently cost a few thousand!)

If there is such a thing as a 'rarest' 4200, I'd imagine it would be a facelift manual spyder with vintage pack...

Rare beasts indeed, how lucky are we to be enjoying these magnificent and truly fabulous cars. The Elasticity of that four cam V8 and that sound! It just mind boggles me.....The car just has bags of character warts 'n' all and to think at 385bhp this is/was meant to be a daily driver back in the day really impresses. Such a capable car. I love it to death. I can't shake off the feeling of how the next generation may well be a lot poorer for not having this sort of experience in future cars. Or maybe they will who knows.

For about five years leading up to my purchase in 2016, I spent way to long "on-line" searching, where I counted over a dozen 4200's/CC's...and a further ten 3 Pedal cars scrapped or written off for good at various yards and it really saddened me. These are hard enough to find as it is but to have seen them like that was just plain sad...I can only imagine what a kick in the privates that must have been at £60 odd thousand when new........Not an easy pill swallow.

So at the risk of showing my age in quoting the 70's cop show Hill Street Blues, "Hey let's be careful out there"........with these treasures.

My neighbour at the end of the lane has one.....lovely. He uses it loads as well. I always know when he has taken it out as hear it drive down the lane ...lovely noise.

He stopped the other month to have a chat but had to turn her off for a bit as it was starting to overheat after 5 mins of chatting at idle!

I’m also a recent owner of a 2004 4200 GT and based in New Zealand. From what I understand there maybe 4 Rhd manuals including the one I have.
The data I have got is a bit mixed as well as our system runs off the description entered in when a vehicle is registered. In the attached list you can see 4200 coupe and cambio corsa descriptions so again it’s very hard to tell exactly what is what. All of these cars are most likely Rhd.
