How bad are Diesel Massers?

I sadly need to change my lovely QP for something a little more efficient...

The shortlist is looking like a 2016 A8/A6 or a 2015 Ghibli...

I know the answer here will be biased to the Italian entry, but what are costs like for a modern maserati? To me, originating from the FCA parts store, they don't feel like real maserati... I can almost justify a pipe costing £500 as it's a Ferrari part, but are the parts equally inflated for Ghibli or will spared and servicing be similar to the Audi?

Its not a bad car at all to be fair.

Given the cost of servicing is mainly the labour it will cost traditional Maserati prices to look after properly. But your main cost will be depreciation.

You should weigh that against any perceived savings in running cost againt your QP V.

I have a QP diesel which replaced my BMW 730 Long wheel base. A full service on the beemer would be about £500 and £700 for the QP. The tyres are cheaper on the QP as not run flats which on the 730 were £300 a pop. Brakes from a main dealer, all round discs and pads on the 7 series was about £2k, I would say similar for the QP. But I have not had this done yet. Fuel costs pretty much identical. average 35 mpg and up to 45 on a run. So I would say if you are running a prestige executive car, like an A8, S Class or XJ, the costs are a bit higher but not double.

Depreciation is going to hit me with whatever I choose, but the servicing is a bit of a concern

Paying top tier servicing for something that is more of a commodity car...

The QP has been surprisingly reliable and won't really loose much more, but it is my daily and there is always the niggle that something will require a bucket of cash, or worse, time off the road.

Buy a 3 year old GIb d and have it serviced at a normal village garage.

Revel in the fact your daily is a Maserati rather than some Germanic Euro box and just enjoy the experience, don’t worry about the mileage you load on and accept the fact you’ll get feck all back for it when your done.

Your here for a good time not a long time.

Exactly what I did except mine is a petrol. ;-) Agree with the sentiment.

Head says German... but nail and head... everything looks so **** generic! The Ghibli isn't as stand out individual as the QPV, but there is certainly a bit more style.

Realistically, is 40+mpg long term average possible?

Ignore the negativity usually based on no actual experience.
As an owner for nearly four years I would definitely recommend.

How much MPG do you get from diesel Ghibli.....Say mostly Motorway driving....Was thinking about one as my next daily drive.....My drive to work is 78 mile round trip and all motorway except for 3 miles. Do around 20k a year.

Well over 40mpg is easily achievable. Plus it makes an excellent long distance cruiser, with the car remaining utterly steady on the motorway, and with the engine turning over at around 1800rpm at legal speeds the cabin remains a place of serenity and calm! However at the same time thanks to 600nm of torque when in sport mode the 'shove' when you accelerate coupled with the albeit electronically assisted V8 exhaust growl can be very addictive. I'm not a fast driver but for example coming out of roundabout onto a dual carriageway and accelerating harder than needs be and letting the ocean of torque leave other cars behind is something I find myself doing more frequently than any car I've owned in the past - my previous cars for twenty or so years have been Jaguars, and the last one an XFS Portfolio so a direct rival to the Ghibli.
On the negative, when cold the engine is typically noisier like any diesel, and servicing can be pricier. Although cheaper RFL helps mitigate.
If you do consider one make sure it's a 16my, denoted by the adblue tank and the level display option shown within the TFT instrument menu. This means it's Euro6 compliant and avoids any of the emission taxes such as the London ULEZ.
Whilst the engine is not built by Ferrari they were involved in the development and as such the car is certainly infused with that Italian flair for performance whilst still being a refined executive car.

Had two cars with ad blu my Jaguar XE and my wife's Audi A4 and they both were a pain in the **** with warning lights for the add blue. Prefer one without and the fact I go no where near emission zones (although sure they will be everywhere soon) that bit will not bother me. It would be an early car. I have been doing a bit of digging on them recently and the reviews and ownership of people away from the forum have been very mixed and there seems to be more negative ownership examples than positive. Think I would have to drive one and see for myself. I love the looks and they always look striking when one goes past but I am not in the camp that the German cars etc are just boxes and don't look good. I have four on my list and I love the way all three look and will drive all first before making the change...Mercedes E250/E350 Coupe (Have the engine in my C250 and it's a really strong engine, pulls well and is a solid car), BMW 640d Grancoupe (love the look of this car. Drove one and it felt stable, pulled well and the interior was a lovely place to be and the 3rd being the Ghibli which has flair and a lovely interior.....Has to be reliable though. If I buy one I will not be serviced at Maserati as their prices are just stupid and as Matt said above will find a friendly local reliable garage and drive it into the ground as adding 20k a year onto a car which will probably have 40k on the clock already would see the car worth 0.20p in three years time. But what beautiful car to run into the ground

We get 28 round town and 45+ on a long run easily.

That's not bad then Phil...lI should get 45 or even more on my journey to work. I get an average of 57 with my C250.... The best I've seen going to work in her is 67 but the Ghibli is more powerful so wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near that.

Not sure there is much negatively expressed here. For the purposes asked, a diesel Ghibli makes a lot of sense, especially a EURO 6 car as you say. They have a strong presence, great badge and are different which is half the reason for getting on. They don’t tick the something special for the weekend box but that has nothing to do with the fuel as no saloons do (IMHO).

Well mine has just ticked over 93k miles. I bought it at 6m old and 6k miles on it in Feb 15. It's been brilliant. Slight issue with some new brakes warping and an issue with the headlight washers but that's been it. For a car that does the work mine does I think that's pretty good. I get around 40mpg out of it but a bit more on a long journey. Took it to Italy last year and it was fab. This is today's journey home from southport which included rural bits start and finish.. ( or if the police look.. obviously it was motorway all the way)

For the benefit of the Police you may want to amend the picture with the cruise control switched off :)
