My main problem with patents is that unless you have the financial means to defend against an infringer your bright new idea is out there in the public domain and your patent may not worth a carrot if your cannot afford to defend it !

And as for infringers based in China, dont get me started !

Just my two cents

Brother in law is a glass blower, had/has copyright on a design, most of you will probably have seen. He attempted to defend against China, almost bankrupted in the process.

My Idea not that ive really got the inclination to take it further . is a widget gadget that would fit in either the TV or possibly between the ariel and the set to automatically reduce the volume when the adverts come on , havent you noticed in recent years how the volume increases quite considerably when the adverts come on , does my head in having to reduce and turn up the volume time and time again

They weren't supposed to be allowed to do that, but I think they use the small print, and it's an "average" volume now. I agree though, VERY annoying.

They dont do it. But theres a "trick" they play, it's called compression (or was when I was playing with elastictrickery) that basically makes the sound more punchy. The average volume is low but they punch up the bits they want to grab your attention ie the voice.

Easy solution though Loz. Get Sky plus, dont ever watch live TV and engage in judicial use of the fast forward button.

CALM act comes into play in the states soon to make ads no louder than programs. I believe it's going to be measured subjectively so should stop them using the compression trick we have to put up with.

Loz,
You can always use the MUTE button mate like I do, it cheeses me off too, especially if I was nodding off nicely and some idiot comes on shouting about double glazing, or such like, aarrgghh...!!! Some sets have an auto volume setting you can use..??
Cheers

Back in the '80s I used to while away long motorway journeys bouncing ideas like this off a friend of mine. Together we came up with mail-order videos long before lovefilm.com did and we thought there would be a market for continuous loop video recording in cars to help in insurance claims.

Needless to say we never took any of these musings any further than chat.

I'm surprised you can hear the telly Loz. Thought your hearing had gone courtesy of Mr Larini?

Loz has the valved ears and they are a bit selective.

Im the controller of the remotes in this house .....ah but .....and there's a ..... big but ..................eh indoors hates the volume changing just as much as me , now where as most of the time im on here whilst watching the box i can cockk a deafen to it ,( well practiced with eh indoors like ) but she insists it gets turned down when the adds come on , and its generally when im in mid post , so definately a market for a widget ..... other wise my post count is gonna drop and we cant have that
