Anyone remember Raymond Baxster?
He seemed to be everywhere on television in the 70's.
According to my increasingly unreliable memory ;)

I'm sure it is like anything where some like and some don't as much is so subjective. We are all different and like different things. Life would be boring I'd we were all the same. There wouldn't be enough Masers to go around to kick off with!

Many of the new age You Tubers I find very boring but most old school journos are a bit more articulate as often the English language and writing were clearly important.

Shmee! Don't get me started!!

Sometimes old is better! I guess the youngsters will disagree.

I had to Google this guy. The name was vaguely familiar.
Watched the 2018 video he did about his Escort rally car.
Was left wondering which public school he went to. Couldn't find that, but did discover
that he went to St. Andrews. That made me laugh. (No offence to anyone here who went
to St Andrews. I happen to like the place. A lot. But it does actively seek those students
who have 'the right accent'.)
There's something that strikes me as very odd about this guy.
Its as if he's been obsessively watching car reviews all of his life and instead of polishing his
own presenting style, has become a kaleidoscope of all of the upper middle class male
presenters around his own age. Dan Snow, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and so on.
I'd rather watch someone who's had a career or two and then fallen into television based on
their own, very individual style.

Not sought to make television presenting their career from the outset and an end in itself.
Apologies. Its clearly long past time for my 'happy' tablets.
A bit like politicians today - 'but I have worked in industry....I was a political researcher/lobbyist....doesn't that count....'. I think I preferred ex successful businessmen, lawyers, trade union leaders. At least they had a semblance of reality.

Another nice trip this time in the Esprit Turbo.
I look forward to watching that. Sold my father in law's Turbo SE (280 bhp on overboost!) for him a few years back. He bought it new and did about 20k miles in it, forking out thousands in service bills to Bell & Colville over the years. Paper thin leather, appalling build quality that looked like a 70s kit car built by a teenager. A dream shattered for me as I really wanted to like it. Probably worth more than the £11k I sold it for now though.....

I like Harry's channel, just watched the Espada engine rebuild ones, wonder if he had a hand in persuading Iain Tyrrell Restorations to start his channel?

I'm sure he did and he is another very clever and interesting guy that comes over very well indeed with a lovely workshop too.

He definitely did - one of them mentions the fact either in the first Ian Tyrrell video or in one of Harry's more recent ones - possibly the recent RR Hybrid video. Am enjoying the Tyrrell videos almost as much as Harry's.

I missed the St Andrews bashing when it happened, but have to comment given I was there. It has always had a significant "yah" population (particularly in the Arts Faculty), but at the same time is one of the more internationally diverse universities in the UK and does a pretty good job with scholarships to get people in from more diverse backgrounds. Back in the 90's, when there were still some grants, I went there from a very ordinary comprehensive school.

Harry was the original owner of my old Ghibli II. He came along to the photo shoot with Jethro when Evo did a buyers guide featuring my Ghibli and a guy called Scott Crane’s Cup. Seemed a nice enough guy and was pleased to see the Ghibli was still going. Sadly it rusted away after that.

Never heard that comment about St. Andrew's before.
my youth is currently there and have met a bunch of his mates who are all spot on though they are primarily the rugby lads. quite a few from USA there though

Anything to do with cars, motor racing and aviation Baxter was the man !

Baxter was an accomplished rally driver and competed in the Monte Carlo Rally twelve times, six of them as a member of the BMC Works Team. He also competed in numerous Alpine, Tulip and RAC Rallies, which was satirised in the character Roland Thraxter in Peter Ustinov's Grand Prix du Rock. He was a crew member in the New Zealand Air Race in 1953, in a British European Airways Vickers Viscount.
Having an authoritative voice, he frequently commentated on motoring and aviation events. He was the BBC's motoring correspondent from 1950 to 1966, including at least twenty Formula One races, the Le Mans 24-hour race, and the Monte Carlo Rally.

I went to St. Andrews, late 90's for Economics Postgrad. Enjoyed it.
(It was popular with US, Germans and Scandinavians as I recall).

Spitfire pilot in WW2 too.

Yes he did. I think he started a while after I graduated. Allegedly there was a marked uptick in female applicants to St Andrews that year.

I heard this as well, although in retrospect I struggle to understand how, given that everyone would be applying rather in advance and I doubt that his choices were in the public domain.

Of course, it'd be possible to narrow it down with some intelligent guesswork but stil....

C
