GTS engine catastrophe

I wouldnt get to depressed just yet, sounds more external than internal to me , the fact that the engine is still running and starting and no smoke , maybe prop of fan or belt related would be my bet , whatever the case keep us posted , you'll have several hundred owners with there fingers crossed for you

I certainly am no expert. Oil level is good though, so I'd be optimistic. Or is it ******. One or the other. ;)

I think you're looking at 7/8k for an engine, similar for a rebuild. I stand to be corrected tho - just what I've seen on eBay for Maser engines.

Thanks for that - best to know I guess.. Still hopeful it won't come to that. I'm fairly sure it was still running on all 8 cylinders, so unlikely to be con rod failure??

I appreciate the positive thoughts! And yes I imagine it's pretty scary for a lot of people, so I'll keep you posted for sure.

Thanks - another vote for the upside ;)

Not withstanding Marios' huge expertise there are tens of thousands of these engines out there. Many many are over 100k miles. In the 8 ish years hanging around on these forums I can't recall 5 cases of engines spontaneously detonating.

Indeed. I'd be inclined to agree with Loz.

See if you can get someone local you trust to check it out. Hopefully Dale might be able to the trip to you.

As Loz said, we've all got our fingers crossed!

I'm with Marios on this one.
Certainly don't keep starting it up and loading it until you have someone who really knows these engines.
On my old 4200 the engine was condemned by a leading expert when the oil water pump unit failed.
I ran it for 4 years after I repaired it and 6 years on its still going good in New Zealand.
Bonne Chance.

Thanks a lot - yes I intend to contact Dale after the bank holiday and see if he can get to Norfolk.

Thank you for the positive thoughts. Yes I already decided I wouldn't start it any more until a specialist can take a look. And hopeful they won't condemn it ;).

Good luck good luck good luck.

Even if the absolute worst happens, I trust your avatar’s lady in red will remain enthusiastic about your car, regardless of its circumstances.

Thank you thank you thank you! Oh yes I'm sure she will, it does make an excellent and surprisingly cuddly prop :).

This might be a bit of a long shot but when I had Alfa’s and lived in Norwich I used to take them to the Alfa Shop which is just off the ring road almost opposite where the old comet used to be. They worked on all sorts of exotic cars. It might be worth giving Karl a call and see what he has to say. Was just a thought.

Wow. I've just read your tale of woe and have my fingers crossed for you.
Your mechanical skills and knowledge appear to mirror mine. I would have restarted it too, several times actually, in the hope that said malfunction would just very nicely go away.
