GTS engine catastrophe

Nightmare indeed - good luck and let hope it’s something like alternator - aircon pump, but it does sound ominous.

Yes it's the kind of thing that fleetingly goes through your mind when contemplating buying a used Maserati, but you convince yourself the odds of it happening to you are very low. And thanks for the positive thoughts, yes hopefully it'll be something relatively simple and fixable, I don't fancy the cost of an extensive engine rebuild......!

I have a classic Mustang as well which I bought with a fully rebuilt engine, whist giving it the beans and showboating (guilty as charged) it started making an unbelievable noise - turned out to be a sheared rocker bolt - had the lot changed and got the car back with £300 Bill - so big horrible noises are not always as bad as they seem.

Well thanks - I live in hope it's just one new bolt or two that's needed :). But of course the cost of American classic spares (especially Mustangs) are very different to exotic Italian machinery. I had a '68 Mercury Cougar 302 which was mechanically almost identical to the Mustangs of that era. Spares are so plentiful and relatively cheap, though the only thing I had to replace in 7 years was the brake master cylinder. Those old survivors are incredibly tough machines.

Thanks again for all the suggestions of quick things to check. I've checked the belts and they all look perfect and seem to be adjusted correctly. The engine looks level, judging by eye, but I couldn't check the engine mounts yet. So far it's looking like an internal engine problem. Or maybe several problems.

If Dale can't get to you, I suggest you send it to a Masser specialist.

Sports Italia is on the south coast, maybe too far? But, might be worth it considering trust/potential cost savings.

McGrath?

Shiltech?

Giallo?

There's definitely some I wouldn't take it to.

Is there anything intrinsically difficult about re-shelling and/or re-bearing'ing a Maser V8 assuming no real other damage? In my past I've rebuilt US GM V8's - simple design though, pushrod.

Imagine the tolerances are much tighter. Couldn't do it now - it'd do my back in....

We had a couple of cars in the last six months in with similar problem to your description .
If you think the noise is internal do not start it again in order you don’t do any more damage .
Both cars we had in it was con rod failures and the customers drove the cars and we had to replace the engine on both cars .

If you need any advice you can call any time , but please do not start the car until someone that has experience on this cars looks at it .

You’ve had a couple in, what’s going on here Marios for these cars to be chewing up con rods?

Best not be the start of something of concern
With these engines I hope

Many thanks for the thoughts. Yes I'm already in touch with Sports Italia, though it is a long way from Norfolk it's likely to be the best option. I've used Bar-Tech before but they are closed for Covid lockdown.

thanks for the thoughts - I'm way out of my depth here but I do agree that Maserati V8 is likely to be a different proposition to US pushrod V8s in terms of tolerances and indeed complexity.

And they've all been 4.7's I think. Not sure of the relevance though!

I think if my car suffered the worst probably not worth repairing. Get another and use other one as a donor for part as and when.

Hi Marios, and thanks for you thoughtful response. Wow that all sounds like a worst case scenario. Remarkable you've seen two similar failures lately. Yes good advice - I didn't intend to start the engine any more until I gets to a specialist. I'm now wondering what's the cost of engine replacement......

And thanks for the offer of advice - much appreciated.

I think you're looking at 7/8k for an engine, similar for a rebuild. I stand to be corrected tho - just what I've seen on eBay for Maser engines.

I wouldnt get too depressed just yet, sounds more external than internal to me , the fact that the engine is still running and starting and no smoke , maybe prop of fan or belt related would be my bet , whatever the case keep us posted , you'll have several hundred owners with there fingers crossed for you
