The output from the NIT, at least physically, is a dead standard ISO. Given that this is also fitted to a load of Peugeots, I'd be really surprised if it was doing the kind of processing you suggest but hey, I've been wrong before. This morning :D

I did another check, connecting a speaker directly to the NIT on front and back output and the difference was pretty clear. Also, there is no mention of highpass filter in any parts catalogue that I could find. I should go into a car audio shop and have them confirm my suspision, but thats something I plan on doing when I decide to go the DSP (and possible amp) route. Car was in for a service but I forgot to check this with the maserati genius doing the service.

Chris you are progressing down exactly the same path as me... I have a 2015 GTS non-Bose and have already swapped all 4 speakers out with Focal replacements but the result is not great. As you say, the fronts are heavily high pass filtered (removing bass) but the rears seem to get full range. I have also bought a compact Focal amp and because of the above an Audison Bit10 to de-equalise the NIT. Setting the unit to Bose (via Proxi) to remove the HPF is a good idea, BMW do similar with their head units applying some filtering when no amp is installed on the base audio which can be coded out.

I have removed the rear shelf and the subwoofer hole beneath the shelf is simply covered with a metal panel so just needs a Bose parcel shelf to replace, there seem to be a few on ebay. There isn't much depth for a sub so a shallow mount unit is definitely required (I haven't planned on any of that yet).

I bought a VW quadlock adapter but have discovered that the speaker connector within the quadlock is detachable, so am planning to remove just that plug and tap into the speaker loom using the quadlock parts, running power independently. All of this will be easily reversible without cutting or splicing any factory wires.

I have all the components, just haven't had time to get started! Good to hear confirmation of what I suspected as well though with the factory defaults... Keep us updated as to how you get on and I will do the same.

Ive had similar issues, with upgrading speakers to Focal with an existing JL audio sub left me distinctly underwhelmed. Came to the conclusion that the signal getting to the amp must be a bit rubbish, so have ordered a JL Audio Fix-86, which on paper seems to do the tidying up of the headunit output signal needed. Looks dead easy to install and set up. Hoping to do next weekend and will report back on improvement.

If youre still looking for sub options, Mine came with an active Focal sub mounted under the kickplate in the passenger footwell. I think this is where a sub is sometimes located from OEM.

Great to hear that you we both are heading in the same (right) direction. Looking forward to reading about your progress.

It’s the head unit. Those of us running CarPlay it’s sublime and with the oem crappy speakers.
