GT or BRERA?

Buddy of mine was given a non prodrive resale red Brera brand new as a company car. After a month of driving it he hated it so much he refused to drive it and left it on his drive for over a year and then demanded they come and take it back (he preferred to use his much older e46 330i). It took them a couple of attempts to move it due to seized brakes from sitting outside for a year untouched. Sorry state for a car just over a year old but said a lot about his view of how it drove. Pretty car though.

Not really paid them much attention, is the 3.2 in the Brera the JTS engine then and not the 3.2 Busso from the GTA?
No, it was a Holden block with an Alfa head and intake.
About 15bhp more horses, but less torque and more weight…

Thanks for the multitude of replies. He's done his homework, aided by many of the comments/experience shared on here, and is set on a GT. We've found a 1.9 cloverleaf 170 with Q2 diff, low mileage and a decent specialist history for sensible money - heading off at the weekend to look and maybe buy it.

I feel the better car out of the GT and Brera is the GT solely because of the engines

the Brera is prettiest but the 2.2 and 3.2 petrols are very thirsty and slow
The 2.4 diesel is very costly when it goes wrong and it will go wrong

the GT has the long used 1.9 diesel or a choice of 2 twin spark engines which overall are reliable
In Cloverleaf trim they look very nice especially in the Black or Blue

will he consider a Giullietta? Great 1.4 multi air in them….or a cloverleaf one with the turbo engine
Both can be had for 5-6k

I'm bemused by the views that the 2.4 diesel engines will go wrong. Ive had 4 different 2.4 diesel engined alfas. 3 x 156 175 bhp engines and 1 x 159 2.4 210 bhp engine.

The only issues i had was a split turbo pipe and a sticky egr valve. Between the 4 cars i covered around 150k miles in them.

I cant really fault them but others tell a very different story.

Time to close the thread, my son is now officially allowed to be called a petrol head and we’re a 2 Alfa family.

The new aquisition is safely home after a faultless 140 mile drive back from the westcountry.

Many who know me won’t be surprised to learn we got a very good deal, way under his budget. He’s a happy lad!

Let’s hope I am as lucky in a Brera Spider Italia Independant 1750 Turbo I’m bidding on Wednesday

Not another Brera Matt….Doesn’t it bring you out in cold sweats when the name is mentioned.

Nice, he'll maybe develop more of a sense of adventure in a few years! ;)

He’s delighted, Andy - we’ve discovered it’s a very rare spec car. It’s wanted for nothing with just 3 previous owners and everything that’s been done to the car is backed up with invoices. It’s mostly been looked after by Autolusso in Bournemouth. Most of the GT foibles have been addressed already, so fingers crossed it’s not a lemon!
