Hi Jallan I bought the GS you refer to. It does need some work but it’s still a lovely sounding car. Main issue is the clutch which will need a change. Do you have any inspirational ideas about how to change the clutch without costing an arm and a leg?
Congrats on saving it, I'm pleased someone bought it, I'm more pleased you found your way here, good luck with it, I'm sure it's not all bad :)

Patrick, hoping you end up with a real bargain there.

Keep us posted... but I suspect you will have to dig deep[ish] for the new clutch.

If you are very handy with the spanners I recall Craig Waterman who used to be on here producing a guide on how to change the clutch - still need to get it to a dealer for the final calibration if I remember correctly.

Either way, hope you enjoy!

Thanks - it’s really is a lovely car and scrubs up quite nicely. Of course it has som minor imperfections but it’s 16 years old. It seems to have been owned by some people who’ve really looked after it

Congrats on buying it. Hopefully you got a good deal for it. I can see it has had a much needed wheel refurb. Apart from the clutch, what other plans do you have for it? Hopefully a full service. Keep posting updates though!

I gave up on the Gransport search as I was struggling to find one with the right spec, so ended up getting a V10 BMW M6.

The v10 m6 is a great car
especially if you get a nice exhaust such as the eisenmann race exhaust or the straight pipe akrapovic tips.

Good to the GS has been bought, everything can be sorted with a few spanners and a bit of commitment hope more of the former and less of the latter

Always fancied an M6 V10 but after seeing that video it puts me off somewhat. I'm sure my fairly stock E60 M5 with sports back boxes only sounded much better than that. Doesn't seem a great noise to me.

That is the akraprovic straight pipe tips so not that sophisticated. The one to go for is the 2-3 k Eisenmann race exhaust for the m6 which gives the signature f1 sound and has the nice oval tips.

Why would you ruin such a lovely car like an E30 M3 with that silly stance and wheels. Idiots driving like that on roads in built up areas.

I am tempted to just get rid of the rear mufflers completely. Quite a common mod in the US. Should save about 25kg in weight too. The only issue is the car is loud/drones on cold start with the stock exhausts, so I don't think my neighbours would be too happy with a louder exhaust.

Something like this:

Yeah those look similar to the eisenmann race exhaust rear mufflers. See how it has the nice oval tip finish which looks better too. In my opinion the eisenmann race exhaust is best system to go for if you have the m6 as it’s sounds good plus aesthetically is a nice finish on the rear of the m6.

Forgive the slightly daft question - I’ve been in touch with Eurospares to buy a clutch for the GS and they have one in stock. I’ve told them it’s a 2004 model - am I right in saying that there would only be one type of clutch and no variants? It’s just in case having bought it I find out I’ve got the wrong clutch! (I made this mistake with an engine for a 3200).

I’d rather buy it myself than let the garage buy as they’ll then charge me a second load of Vat.

thanks 67951

Car looks great Patrick.

As for the clutch advice has often been to be wary of buying from anywhere but a main dealer. There was a batch in circulation that suffered frequently from premature tang failure, although I'm not sure how prevalent that is anymore. Maybe some of the more senior forum members can offer a definitive answer. Buying from the MD means you can make sure you get one of the newer (and therefore less effected) clutch units.

As per Jayblue the dodgy clutch batch was several years. That's not to say there may not be stock lingering around though. If it were my choice I'd give Meridian a call and speak to Ross. They offer a 10% forum discount. Assuming they're open.
