If you’re not old enough to be trusted to choose between lager and bitter then surely you can’t be trusted to decide more important things?

Greta is a typical opinionated teenage who wants to get her point over by shouting, ranting and throwing her toys around. She thinks she's right and everyone else is wrong and as Catman keeps pointing out to us things are never that simple.

However I do think that youngsters are more aware than we give them credit for and as some above says we should listen to some of what they say unless of course its their bedtime and we can send them away so the adult conversation can start ;)

One thing I do notice, youngsters are more aware, but tend to be very black/white until later.

That's always been the case, age and experience often make you aware of other points of view. I have a friend that often reminds me of one of my teenage opinions and although it fundamentally hasn't changed I shudder when I remember how I expressed it

Of course. She's too young to have learned what we euphemistically might call negotiating skills, and doesn't have any answers because, in truth there probably is no answer that will keep everyone happy (as ever)
So who makes the call as to who's unhappy?

It's only because we don't like the message, that we don't like the messenger.

As others have said, one way or another she is raising awareness of an issue that would otherwise by brushed away by the corporates that will have to make big, expensive changes to their businesses.
Maybe the great barrier reef is fine, maybe it isn't. But if the animals that live there are filled with plastic I'm sure we'd all agree that it's a bad thing.

If the world was the size of your living room I guarantee you'd change the way you consumed and disposed of things, and you would probably do all that you could to generate oxygen rather than filling that room with CO2.
And why would you do that? Because it would affect you directly and quickly, that's why. The problem is that we who exist on this planet right now are unlikely to see the true effects of our wanton destruction of the planet.

A V8, or more manly V12, here and there will not make a difference. A global effort on the things that we all come into contact with every day on the other hand can make a difference. And that's the message that I believe Greta is trying to get across... albeit in an annoying way.

There will always be a problem dealing/communicating with this out lady due to her suffering from Asperger syndrome. I worked directly with a colleague who had the problem, and know the issues it throws up.

And what issues are they?

Why do supermarket turnips get wrapped in polythene?

I expect you'll find it significantly increases shelf life. You may well find it also reduces the need for cool storage / transport with its associated energy problem. I'm not saying it is but don't forget the Supermarket isn't going to get them wrapped unless there's some benefit. Even if it's just to make it look pretty....

My very first impressions of Greta came from an unlikely source. I very much liken her popularity and rise to that of Aung San Suu Kyi. The world came together to say what a wonderful person she was which led to her voice becoming a symbol of hope, blah, blah, blah. Now she has the power, it's went to her head in all matters of speaking. The point here is that in this PC world, people, often influential leaders etc are too quick to jump on the band wagon to big somebody up and have them become a voice for the many and all that tripe.

I’m no climate activist by any stretch of the imagination, but I suspect this thread potentially illustrates perfectly the problem that Greta and others are exercised about.

Why are we talking about whether a 16yr old girl should be in school or not, or the absurdity of some of her travel arrangements, rather than talking about the “allegedly” overwhelming scientific evidence which suggests that globally the human race is doing more harm to the world than the world can cope with, and that we are rapidly approaching a point of no return.

I get that we are all petrolheads, but not sure that gives us a get out of jail free card....

Climate change and are responsibility in it is just one of many ways we are screwing this planet and we all should take our own small actions when possible but to address these type of issues fundamental global changes need to happen and unfortunately getting governments to act is next to impossible.

An interesting view I read the other day was that there is one root cause of all the worlds issues and that is over population by the human race an interesting point but ultimately probably correct.
