I just don't understand how Maserati can be anything other than a small unit sale business. The rebirth of Alfa has failed and Jaguar is in a similar mess. Just producing clones of what the big brands do does not work and the Grecale will likely struggle in the same vein. I don't know why they do not just use it as the FCA (of whatever it's now called given its got some cheap French cars in the mix) premium brand and make everything over £125k like Aston, Bentley, Ferrari etc etc - coupe, convertible, nutter mid engined thing and a proper premium SUV. The continued push downmarket just won't work.

looks OK, as does the Levante IMHO. If you like SUV's (another discussion entirely) I'm not sure what you all find so bad about the Levante and Grecale? I'll happily tootle in a Levante Trofeo when they hit the used market and some other poor punter has taken the first hit.

Because for me it is ugly as a bag of b0llocks. Thought they would grow on me but no still a pig to look at. Sure it is great to drive though if you like that sort of thing.

If you think that's ugly, you should have seen the Lamborghini SUV I followed out of Gloucester Airport last week. Matt grey, matt black wheels, bright calipers. The only things missing was the furry dice.

I can't think of an SUV that is not ugly, please tell us your favourite. I have a BMW X3 as a family car. Great drive, practical, safe (blah blah) but, ugly.

Dont think I have a favourite to be honest in this market but if I had to pick one there is only the Range Rover that manages to combine luxury and style to this box shape vehicle. But hey we all see different things.….. The issue I have with the Lavante is that they have tried to be adventurous with the front and when they got to the back they ran out of talent. It is so bland that it’s embarrassing for such a marque and looks like so may others. Not my cup of tea but if you like it then enjoy.

Again, Maserati are late to the party...moved into diesel after it was found to be killing the planet. Moved into SUV last...but they are only driven by incompetent fkwits and mums to school! They beggars walk!
I'll expect an fully electric car after everyone else has moved on to hydrogen...yes I've heard of the new GT but it's a trend with Maserati.

I think the point of the Grecale is the same as the point of the Ghibli. For me the Ghibli represented an attainable point to be able to own a new Maserati. Six years ago when I ordered my car, after options but before a healthy discount it was circa £70k. For the same money you were looking at E class 5 series, or in my case another Jaguar in the shape of the then second generation new XF. The simple fact why buy one of the usual executive saloon choices, all very capable but all too familiar and boring, when you can get a new Maserati which when fully specked does the luxury and exclusivity thing so much better, and the fact that it's got a diesel engine was not nor has never been since an issue!
The same will be the case with the Grecale, why have a common as muck BMW etc SUV when you can say you own a Maserati.
From my own prospective, I would like to stay with the brand but I will have to see whether the new electric 4 door that is rumoured will be affordable, or if as it's repIlacing both current saloons, if it's going to pitched beyond me into the 100k bracket.
A potentially Interesting alternative could be coming from Lotus. They are talking about launching a new 4 door electric coupe in the next two or three years (which like their planned SUV's will be made in China), but again like with the Audi E Tron GT, Porsche Taycan, and even the Tesla Model S, all come in near to six figures. It would be nice to see a new electric, which is now seemingly the only future, four door mid size exec starting around the 50-60 mark which historically has been the case. Instead we have what I can only describe as 'model creep' where the smaller saloons e.g. Polestar 2, Model 3, all cost as much as cars from the class above. The same goes for the new breed of electric hatchbacks in the shape of the ID3 or the bigger Ioniq 5, they all seem to be priced into a class above. I assume a lot of this is down to battery cost, but I can't help but think the manufacturers are sneaking in higher prices for higher profits.
Anyway to get back to this topic a bit more, I have to agree with many on here, SUV's really don't appeal although the Levente I was loaned in July drove very well- even if it looked and felt like I was driving a bus, and yet my neighbour thought it looked great. As I say, apart from something iconic like a Range Rover, I just don't see it.

That's a bit harsh MLC.

We've had a few SUV types as family cars, they do a job well and can be decent enough. We've currently got a Macan, which is both good looking IMHO and good to drive. The driving position and size inspire confidence and work well in all weather. I've also got a 5 series touring and where it's probably better in many ways, it's not that much different.

For me, if the Grecale and Levante allow them to make cars like the MC20 and maybe, a new Stradale, it's worth it and then some.

The new ownership of Maserati seems to be a bit more switched on and hopefully they won't be so far behind trend as previous. When it comes to electric, again, I think it's fine so long as they use the profit to fund driver's cars and racing budgets (cars prefeerable to America's Cup yachts).

With the new group Stelantis and the Pugeot Citroen on board this will help...as long as Maseratis are not rebadged Pugs.

Harsh but fair. 30 years ago the mummy walked the kids to school or possibly used a small Pug/fiesta/Nova...now they are in an unnecessary tank.
I've seen so many people unable to master the size of them.
My main point is that these big cars are only used as city runabouts, it's a waste of resources.
Yes I get that Maserati are building SUV as a cash cow to build real cars but it's pandering to the current consumption misconceptions.

By the same argument a GranTurismo is unnecessary and pandering to a weird bunch with strange misconceptions. Some people desire a GT for no rational reason and some people will desire a Grecale for no rational reason. Maserati building cars people want is the right move. There was a period a couple of years ago when they actually sold more cars than Alfa. You wouldn’t have imagined that in 2001!!

It was going to be the maserati stelvio right. So it's nowhere near a small suv like a Macan.

There is definitly some improvements possible and more premium look and feel compared to a Stelvio. And a Maserati sounds more appealing then a Alfa to a lot of folk.
