Didn't have a great experience when I bought mine from them. The owner was positively nasty and accused Shiltech and me of lying and trying to shaft him when I had a variator issue.

Eek, they’re in Sutton in Ashfield. Worked up there for a while in the early 2000’s, for someone who grew up in the luxurious surroundings of 1980s Birmingham and the Black Country it was a bit of an eye opener.

Isn't that the reason the likes of bmw and audi reduce the labour rates and parts prices to encourage owners to keep them going.

People buy classics hoping for an easy ride or if a big bill hits them then an appreciation in value might cover it.

Maserati is stuck in the middle, expensive to maintain , expensive to repair and on a downward spiral of depreciation.
I completely agree with you and sadly my experience over recent months is a perfect example of this.

Well done on your sale. It looked a lovely example and hopefully gone to an appreciative home. Slightly disappointed we won’t hear reviews of your summer exploits and trips. If I remember correctly you are retiring aren’t you? If you are then good for you and best wishes for the next chapter.
Many thanks Chris. Sadly I am on to pastures new now (like buying a 10 month old Merc which I know I will have no trouble selling in the future). 3 years ago when I bought my QP I thought then that buying 'unique' and something a bit more 'special' would be perhaps be a good thing to do..... but unfortunately from my experience it hasn't been the case.

Frankly, it is a race to the bottom which having just sold my 2009 QP 4.7 S today, ..."I'm out". The market is a disaster right now and I won't be looking to re-enter it for a good few years sadly. I wish it was different.

Congrats and commiserations all at once! Hope you got a good price mate. Loved your QP.

Then again I got into investing just before the financial crash, bought bitcoin at its highest and house at the peak, so take my analysis at your own risk.

Did you also wear a tuxedo and drive a golf GTI by any chance? :)

Trouble is there's still lots of high miles rubbish out there still pulling the last few nice example's down in price..

Give a couple of years when all this eBay rubbish has gone to the scrapper!

Dave
Nope completely disagree here , mine may be considered high mileage but in no way shape or form is it rubbish, it's the low mileage buyers that need to be wary , low mileage is not everything, ask @Oneball ..... think that's quite an arrogant stance tbh. No wonder they're worth jack s5it.

I agree....I would prefer a car with high miles that's been well looked after. These cars need to be driven and used and I believe that you would probably get less issues than one with low miles that sits in a garage.

If you buy the right car at the right time and have it fully inspected pre purchase it will be a very shrewd purchase.

It can go either way on the mileage thing iMHO.

If you buy a low miler that hasn't been used regularly enough also that has an inflated price it won't represent great VFM. However as the market sentiment is towards these cars it is likely you will have less trouble selling at a strong price. It is less likely to need any major spends such as suspension and bigger ticket items that often fail at certain higher miles.

There are two sides to a higher miler though that are dramatically different and poles apart. You can but one that has been regularly used and well looked after with anything replaced when required. Things like water pumps, suspension components, bearings and all sorts that often only need replacement at certain higher miles. The engines and gearboxes in most modern higher end cars are not often weak points and strong for mega miles without significant wear. So you could be buying at a much reduced price than a low miler with similar wear on these areas. In essence the same quality of car with a different number on the odometer for much less. Often there is a smidge more wear on the interior. It still very good.

Then you get the high milers that may or may not have been looked after but are on the edge of needing a raft of things replaced. It may have an intermittent issue or parts know to be close to failing or on their way out. It might be the seller has decided it will need £xk spending in the next year so decides to get out of it before sending the bigger bucks. These are OK if bought silly cheap but if paying too much work out a more expensive option than a better car day one.

Of course we don't have crystal balls but you can often tell a car that has been looked after or not and to what level. This to me says a lot as some will always do the minimum or sometimes not even that. Some will do the minimum and some will always do what is required and much more.

Depends on the difference in price between the options. Sometimes it is not that much more to get into a better car and this can work out more cost effective than a cheaper car quite quickly. Then you always have a better car to sell at stronger money. Sometimes you can buy a cheaper option that works out even better than a more expensive one as has just had loads of stuff replaced and the price differential is quite large.

As always it is a case by case basis. I won't buy a higher miler clearly not so well looked after, unless it is silly silly cheap. It is just not worth the saving unless it is substantial enough. I will always pay more for a really nicely looked after top drawer low miler but not silly amount more. I paid top mine at the time for my 4200 as it was the best I found out there by a margin. I wouldn't have paid more than I paid though.

There are some great buys out there at the moment, some less so and some far less so. What has changed it seems is the not so good stuff is not selling at any price unless at near scrap/breaking levels. The middle band from top to bottom seems to be struggling the most with some great cars just not selling. The top band seems just as strong as ever with the very best cars always selling pretty quickly.

I'm not sure this is much different to how it has always been just certainly much much more pronounced at the moment.

Sorry, what, a new Vantage for £25,000? Or are you just renting it for £25,000 for 2 years and then you have to give it back?

Give it back or buy it, up to you. It’s how Mclaren are shifting stock now. Great deals to be had if you don’t plan on keeping the car beyond 2 or 3 years and are happy to commit £1-2k per month to hoon round in something exotic and hilarious. As you’re under warranty you know exactly what your outlay will be.

If you buy a higher miles car you are more likely to enjoy using it... too low and you worry you are devaluing each time you drive it

I am temped by the £14k Cat D GT with just 57k miles on it. I wonder how low it could be bought for, spend next to nothing on it bar essential maintenance, and then after 4 or 5 years sell it for peanuts, or part it out.
