Granturismo- Spare Wheel

I finally tracked down a spare wheel. fitted it using small tie down Rachet straps. Looked awful. So I decided to do what should have been done from Factory.
first I drilled a 15mm hole 415mm centre from the edge of the bracket.
Cut down a M14 bolt to 26mm long. Ground down one edge and did the same to a washer.
Welded two M14 nuts together and then ground down one to fit the cone shape of the spare. My only mistake. I should have just bought a lug nut to weld to the nut.

Cutting the holes took far more time than it should have. Don't use a drill or knife. Find a pipe and fit it underneath and then hit it with a hammer slowly. It will give you a better result. I had to strengthen mine as the drill kept snagging on the thin edge.

I never had the top carpet when I bought the car so I used my old Mercedes CLK boot liner. I just had to soak in diesel to remove the glue then cut the backing to size. I placed the carpet where it needed to be and felt for the hole and put a pilot hole in the centre. I used the nut in a vice and hammered to get the larger hole.
Same thing for the foam backing that came with the spare.
When I fitted the wheel over I found that only one hole seemed to work perfectly when keeping things symmetrical. My OCD would not allow me to deviate. So the valve is South. As is the Velcro on the Foam Backing.
I painted a North South line on that hole so as to always get the right fitment.
I got a Thumb Knob 60mm wide M14 80mm thread length with a washer

Cut a piece of Hardboard. I covered it in fabric but didn't like the look so I cut Checkerboard Rubber to lay over that. Bit more practical.
Found a nice Maserati Blue Towel in the airing cupboard and pretend I don't hear the Missus asking what happened to it!
Hope this helps someone if you decide to do similar.

@cakebread1 can I ask what part number was the space saver. Also how much did you pay. I remember you having a 2011 GT but I can't remember if its a 4.2 or 4.7?

Ive decided i need either a space saver that fits in the boot like yours. Or maybe a spare front or rear wheel that I keep at home in the garage.

Did you physically try the spare wheel on the front and the rear? Have you tried to inflate it?
 
The problem with inflating them is getting the air out again to fit in the well.

Sadly you can't get new tyres for them as Verdesine will only sell to Maserati....grrrrr

Thanks for the response, both would be annoying. Air out and not being able to buy a new tyre for it.

Ive got another thread running in the GT section about general gt space savers. I managed to put a hole in the side wall...ive been waiting for recovery for 8 hours. Im only 5 miles from home so have plenty of supplies....but I have to say this is the first time in my whole life that i have been stuck due to a tyre. Ive probably had 20 or 30 flat tyres over the years. A bit of a mixture of me being clumsy and narrow cornish lanes.

Im definitely chasing either the space saver route or just a spare wheel as the missus could have dropped it off with the supplies!

I haven't tried either. I have full confidence :confused:
i suppose another way out would be to get the run flat tyres. I started to look at them yesterday. Mine failed the MOT for two rears so it might be a good time to swap. Pricey though for a pair. lets see how the budget goes.

Ok thanks.

I had to by a new pirelli rear recently, it was £256 delivered by camskill. That is the 100Y version. I take them to my local alloy wheel refub place as I find General tyre fitters damage the alloy. My local changes 25 for full fitting.

I decided against the run flats in the end.

In the future I will be changing to michelin...but I had one 6.5mm tyre on the other rear so it made sense for me to stick with pirelli.

Thanks for the help on the space saver. I will be buying that part number when it comes up for sale

yes that is my next worry. My wheels were custom painted so I don't want them marked when putting on new tyres.

Thanks for taking the time to research this.

I really like this contender..just one problem is it won't fit in the boot. The 18 inch maserati space saver is the only one that will fit and it must have the tyre deflated.

So the question is how long will it take me to find the right 18 inch wheel. If its too long I will.be buying something like that to keep in the garage as at least you get the full kit

If you can send me a link I will take a proper look. I did a quick.google if its the one in the attached spec...then no its the wrong pcd, rim width, and tyre size....but we'll done for looking we can only figure out alternative solutions by looking at what we can find out there

Thanks for the efforts. That's a good idea about looking at alternative wheel manufacturers with the same pcd and centre bore. I will take a look at that.

Ideally I would match all of the following

1. Pcd 5 x 114.3
2. Centrebore 67.1
3. Stud hole size m14 (22 lug nut socket size). Ive found a few with the same pcd....but only take m12 bolts so that would take quite a bit of machine work
4. Rim width 6j, 6 inch but bigger can work
5. Rim diameter 18 inch
6. Offset ET20 preferred but other offsets depending on rim width can work

Then I just need to find a space master tyre to fit to it...and boom we have our very own alternative part determined spare granturismo maserati wheel.

In my case im chasing an 18 inch with the above specs. A wider wheel like that 7.5 may work. The 17 inch may work for the 4.2. I definitely need an 18 inch
