Granturismo sensitive steering?

Above comments are making sense.. My daily at the minute is a 330D BMW and I only drive the Maserati occasionally which is probably the reason it feels light.

Hold on tight at motorway speeds I guess..

Thats very interesting.

Also the turning radius has an effect. Although both wheels move a same amount when you turn the steering wheel you really want the inside wheel to turn more so it scribes a smaller radius as you go round the corner. This isn’t possible as each wheel would have to be controlled independently so the tighter the turning circle the worse the effect.

Surely camber has a bearing on the above?

That being the case, the camber should be set for the width of tyre and hence why inner edges of the fronts scrub?

Camber is there to keep the tyre fully in contact with the road as the car rolls. Caster is change in camber as the steering moves and is used both for self centreing and to increase camber as the radius becomes tighter.

Although they will have an effect on scrub they aren’t used to control it.

Wear on the inner edges is a combination of effect from toe, camber and castor and is usually a compromise.

They main reason your modern car scrubs it’s inside edge and a 1960s Cortina doesn’t is that power steering can let manufacturers use much more aggressive geometries that would make the steering too heavy without PAS.

I think you'll find that the built in Ackerman angle sorts out this issue Tim.

No car has a perfect Ackerman angle as it has disadvantages in other areas. Everything in suspension design is a compromise

I was just trying to explain as simply as I could why you often get tyre skip on modern cars at tight radius.

Isn’t the geometry setup for more planted cornering and hence that’s why we all get the dreaded inner wear on the front tyre ? I’m may be talking ******** though. This also responsible for the skip you can experience on the front wheels when moving off on full lock?

I don’t find it bad but I think anything less than bone dry can perhaps be a little delicate so to speak.

Yes I had the same set up on my stradale when I took the car in for warranty inspection. The inner front tyres were wearing a lot more because of the geometric setup. I think the set up would be fine for track day maybe but probably does not need to be that extreme for day to day road use. So I had it adjusted for less aggressive toe in set up.

That’s my thoughts in a nutshell, ideal for maximising lap times on a smooth track but unessercery for the road. Formula Renault /F3 setup lol.
How much toe in did you put into it ?

Toe out, surely

My local dealership said they all do it even the Levante’s and that Maserati use their style of setup across the board.

I don’t hold much technical faith in my local dealership however and this was the service salesman so taken with a massive pinch of salt.

Sorry Oliver, no idea actually, as the front tyres were not worn evenly (I think the technician at Autofinnica told me that the inside were a lot more worn), so it was changed to a more “neutral” setting. I am sure someone here in the forum could recommend.
