Granturismo handbrake issue

Recently had the MOT done on my 2009 Granturismo 4.7S auto. All fine except the tester said the handbrake only just passed. He said that the left hand/passenger side didn't seem to be working properly. Is this an easy thing for me to look at or.....
Cheers, Nigel

Quite common, the shoes are cheap but I recall someone saying that a Maserati dealer needs to recalibrate it once changed.

Personally I only ever use the EPB intro day and hit park off for overnight parking. It’s a shame that it is needed for the MOT as it’s ****.

My surface is rather level yet the car rolls alot when park is off! Have to use chokes.

If it's an MC shift gearbox, it should automatically engage into 1st gear when you turn off having selected & held the park off button when you switch off, negating the need to use the park brake anyway. I'm not sure about the auto but would leaving it in park not have the same effect?

Auto in Park won't move, but EPB still required for test.

Probably the cables a bit manky, at a wild guess

Thanks. When I put in 'park' on the drive I can definitely feel it take hold. Just never been brave enough to try it without the EPB on a hill.

General recommendation is not to use the EPB except to keep the cables moving freely. They have a nasty habit of binding the shoes to the drums then de-laminating when you go to move off, which cause all sorts of nasty noises and possibly jammed axles.

Autos go in P, and the gearbox is locked. MC got into gear. Gonna be a **** of a hill to roll the V8 down that!

Just as an aside, your MOT tester shouldn’t put your car on the brake rollers for any reason. He should be using a Tapley meter to check the brakes on a road test, by testing either side with the rollers he is risking damage to you limited slip diff. I’d find a more clued up tester.

As for the shoes, they are cheap and quite easy to fit if you are handy. @Gazcw did his, not sure if he needed to recalibrate.

Had epb failure warning after doing it but a couple operations and ignition on/off/on it reset itself no problem. I guess it remembers it's on position which changes after replacement.

Does it actually risk damage to the LSD or is it just there is a risk could jump the car out of the rollers.
I had mine MOT’d and they put it on the rollers and I read later it could cause damage.
Took the car back for a moan and they explained in technical terms I did not understand that using rollers was a safety issue not a damage issue.
I am now thinking they were pulling my chain, but the internet is 50/50 on the issue.

Generally, the EPB should be fine but should be avoided if the car is going to be laid up for a little while, over a week for example. And I certainly wouldn't suggest using the EPB if the car has been driven in the wet or just washed, there's a much better chance of a binding issue then.

It does, the bit in the diff that limits slip (in our particular case, there are other types) are friction plates, effectively thin plates with friction material glued to them, which limit the difference in rotational speed. When they force one wheel to turn independent of the other, it wears the friction material, reducing its effectiveness.

I don’t know what they said, but my tester always knows to use his tapley meter with no qualms whatsoever.

Edit - I imagine the internet is 50/50 becuase there are different types of diff. A Torsen type diff, a 1 way diff, or a viscous diff couldn’t care less what the rollers do.
