For the 4th time since owning the car, I've knocked off the front number plate on a speed hump! Am getting royally pi$$ed off with this now, and so wish we had the American system where you don't need a front plate in certain states.

SO: I was wondering if it is still legal to have stick on number plates on the bonnet/front valance as per E types of old? Anyone know what the law has to say on this?
 
I think the official SM line is to leave the bvgger in the front passenger foot well to show any inquisitive police who may take a dim view of the missing plate. Just fell off, officer, I'll screw it back on when I get home. Worst case is a 30 quid fine. I dont think a stick-on / non-vertical plate is any more legal than not having one at all.

i have mine removed, only because it fell off few weeks ago and havent had the time to get it properly fitted so i leave it inthe car incase i get pulled to say it just fell and ill do it when i go home
 
I had wondered about simply leaving it in the boot/footwell and blagging it if I got a tug, but the memsahib is paranoid about being pulled so am not sure she would go for that one. Thought was having a sticky on the bonnet would appease her and if I got pulled I could feign ignorance.

It's not just the number plate that gets ripped off, it's the plastic bracket that bolts onto the front scuttle that goes too. The **** thing is too friggin low and makes negotiating speed humps a real pain in the posterior.

Yep, been there, done that, got the Tshirt!

Each time I just take it off, take an age cleaning all the old glue off the numberplate and pop the rubber riv nuts back in and do it up again, well, you have to have something to tinker with, or it just would not be a true Italian car!
 
front plates should not be on the car if you drive an italian car...they never design them properly....the 147 is at an angle as are most alfas!!!!
 
Which bit is catching - is it just the edges?

Reason I ask is that my plate is 4 characters and is just the width of the mounting bracket and has not been problematic.

It's the bottom edge that catches, not the sides as Bigbob says, it's not the re-attaching of the bracket that's the problem, it's peeling the plate off the bracket, then cleaning off the double sided foam, and then refitting the whole palaver! Am very tempted to simply screw the plate to the bracket with self tappers to save the faff.
 
As I am about to take delivery of my GT Sport I have always been concerned about this one.

In researching the age old question of what the legal minimum size of plate is (I have a 4 digit plate) I read somewhere that you cannot stick a plate onto the bonnet unless the surface is flat and mostly vertical - eg the plate must face forwards and not be curved, by the nature of the shape of the surface onto which it is stuck. If you wanted to have it facing upwards though (as I imagine the GT S/Sport would be) it would be illegal.

Having said that I have stuck my plate onto a curved section of bumper on a number of cars and never been stopped. [and never been stopped for having a 280mm wide plate x 105mm high plate either]

I was hoping to stick/screw the plate on to a higher point to prevent this as my driveway has a speed bump which is likely to be a problem, so any alternative fixing solution/points you find are appreciated.
 
I got a smaller plate made up for the Testarossa (in Black too - yes I know very naughty) to fit nicely on to the front spoiler lip. Touch wood I have never been questioned about it despite having been pulled up for casual questioning by Old Bill on a couple of occasions. I would say that the plate is about 70% of the height of the standard plate, which I guess makes the letters approx 70% the size they should be. Could be worth a try - you can get them made up in white with black letters. Would give you an extra few cm of clearance and would 'almost' be legal.

When I lived in London I used to have a cracked front number plate (legal size) in the luggage compartment with sticky pads on the back for that age old story of 'a speed hump ripped it off half an hour ago officer, I'll get a new one made up and will stick it back on properly with some fresh pads over the next few days.' I think a copper would be having a seriously miserable day to give you a fine after that story. The most he should give you is a producer, whereby you have to get it sorted within 7 days and have an MOT test station stamp the form before producing at the police station.

You do of course need to stick the normal plate on using self adhesive pads for the annual MOT - I guess Matt will start experiencing that additional headache very soon :(

my pulsar had a stick on plate on the bonnet, never got pulled. (that pic is when i first bought the car so sorry for it looking a little tatty :p)

i think you would get away with stick on plates fine.

people on other forums i know have painted on number plates! (air brushed)

I reminder the ride I took in Pulsar a couple of years back - smirked when i was told it was "quick" - virtually broke my neck with a turbo the size of the moon! :)
 
they are very fast, stage 1 basic modifications (around 310bhp) and you do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, will easily beat most super cars in a traffic light race :)
 
Always fancied the UK spec Sunny GTiR. Rare as rocking horse sh!t now, especially an unmolested one. I still like the look of them.

what about a 3/4 sized front plate & custom bracket? you could mount it an extra cm higher too, should give another good inch+ or so clearance?

not legal either but never known anyone to be done for it.
