According to Wikipedia, all automatic Granturismos use the ZF 6HP gearbox.

It also states that “The last 6HP automatic transmission was produced by the Saarbrücken plant in March 2014” - if this is true, does Maserati use gearboxes produced 4 years ago or are later production cars using a different gearbox?

In addition “Problems with this transmission are well known. This transmission locks up the torque converter in all gears, increasing wear. Combined with a sealed transmission pan and "lifetime fluid", some people have experienced catastrophic transmission failure. There are also problems with the valve block and solenoids. When this failure starts to occur, shift quality and speed, torque transfer and even loss of ability to engage gears can occur. These problems led Volkswagen AG to extend the warranty on all of their vehicles equipped with this transmission to 100,000 miles or 10 years.”

Has this been an issue on Maseratis too?

Hmm

Well yes it locks up the torque converter, but I don't see that's a problem per se.
The lifetime fluid is probably not. I think 50k is generally regarded as a good change interval. The shift block can be refurbished / replaced.

Mine has a little over 90k on it now <shrug> . All cars have issues

there are many ZF 6HP transmissions. ours is the 6HP26. not sure I believe the "last was in 2014" claim. as for failures, mine is currently leaking... a lot. I've heard that the pilot bearing starts to fail, and the increased vibration tears the main seal. I need to get mine looked at soon.

We have just done one a 4.7 Granturismo 2013 car the gearbox was completely trashed View attachment 49379
Is that the Auto or MC shift ? A friend here had an issue with his MC , but that was mainly down to the main dealer in Marbella not checking or changing the gearbox oil and so it run too low and damaged it... they even told him they had checked it (but the original seals were in place )and that it was safe to drive when he reported it to them.....Maserati have now paid for a new gearbox!

Nasty that Marios. I assume something broke and the debris got dragged through the above gears. Keith, as its a 2013 I am pretty sure thats the Auto box and not the MC, as the range was SPORTS in this area with only the 2 seater Strad (2011-12 & the later 4 seater) running the MC Shift box.

The only issue I have heard with the MC Shift box was a mate who sheered the driveshaft off in the diff which resulted in a simple new driveshaft.

ouch to that picture! mine's not that bad. (@keith, that's a planetary gearset -- from an auto)

I'm approaching 50,000 miles. very much not looking forward to forking out what's gotta be a mint to drop this tranny and fix it. from the shop manual, it looks like just about everything on the engine and bottom of the car has to come off...
