Exactly. Put in neutral if an auto and push it in and pull it out. Not possible with the MC obviously.
You can. If you switch to the first position on the ignition without starting then you can put the car in neutral - I do that whenever the car is in the garage. If the parking brake is off then you can push it back.

I'm a little late to the party. I will add, I had the same dilemma. My garage is tight, about 2.3m wide and 5m long....but if you put it in with a slight angle it fits. I open the door into some EVA foam mats on the wall. See pics. It doesn't damage the door. I have a PVC rolling door, so I can push it when it goes up and down to create a bit more space when it passes by the front number plate. Mine fits in length terms by about 20mm.

Its not as hard as it sounds.

  1. Drive it in using a method of lining it up.
  2. Get it close but not right to the back wall
  3. Set it to park off, so that the EPB does not come on
  4. Switch engine off, but leave ignition on
  5. Drop it into neutral, and check EPB is still off (mine is an MC shift F1, so no worries about the MC not being up to it)
  6. Lower window
  7. Open door
  8. Slide your seat all the way back
  9. Do some sort of 180 maneuverer as you slide out the space into the garage
  10. Do your window back up
  11. Switch ignition off, car should still be in neutral, and EPB off
  12. Roll the car the final 100mm or so using the wheel spoke to push or pull it
  13. Lower garage door pushing it out as it comes down so it clears the number plate
Your in!

This procedure has changed a little since i put in some rubber halfords floor mats which memorise the tyre location. Before that, I did not really have to push the door out as it came down over the front wall, as i pushed the car into the back wall instead. The difference with the tyre memory in the mats, the car stops about 20mm from the wall, and I cant roll it right to the end, which means i have to push the door away from the front number plate.

It will fit and so much better than leaving it outside!! I actually use fans as well underneath, a bit like a homemade "carcoon" to keep the air moving which helps stops condensation. Then a C-TEK to maintain the battery, because I can!

P.S Just to add, I have had my GT for just under a year, driving around 2-3 times a week, when nice (its not my daily), so in total i have probally had in and out of the garage about 100 times. I have scruffed the mirror, and some paint on the back bumper, but Ive also learned the angles, so as long as your paying attention it is fine.

Indeed, the things we do!

lets not talk about the crazy fact that I cut about a bit of the garage wall and the back retaining wall to make room....!

The back wall was crumbly anyway. I will actually make it all strong enough to not be a problem for the car. Seems OK 1 year later....for the moment.

I have seen garages with no back wall instead another garage door, but it depends what space you have.

Amazing and respect to you for the effort, but there is no way could be bothered with all that, I would never use the car.

Funny the trick with the wall, a mate of mine removed #4 breeze blocks at the back of his garage to give him an extra few inches to fit his car in.
