Granturismo 4.2 Noise?

I test drove a rather nice Granturismo 4.2, which actually surprised me in terms of acceleration! Coming from 370BHP/tonne in my Elise, I was expecting the large Maserati to be slower than it was ...

I do love the Granturismo, as does my wife! I do feel it was somewhat quiet with the windows down though; I didn’t really notice much difference in note/volume with the ‘sport’ button on/off, which could mean the exhaust valves are stuck in the closed position.

However, what’s the best method to get the most sound out of the 4.2l? Larini X Pipe? Anything else? Are the X Pipes freely available?

It’s a 2008 with no mention of the variator being changed, so I imagine I should have a slush fund for if/when this fails ...

Welcome.

4.2s aren't fitted with valves (except where added later) so this is the reason the note didn't change. There are a few options over and above Larini, Autoshield do an X pipe, there are sports Cats and you can fit the valved boxes from the 4.7 onto a 4.2 and retrofit a manual activation.

A slush fund is a good idea for all sorts of reasons :)

Or. Simply cut out the centre silencer and replace it with a straight pipe. I have the same model. Made a big difference.
Only trade off is the slight buzz sound you get going through 2,500 rpm.
Cost me £200 and you can always reverse it if you choose.
+1 on the slush fund. My car has been incredibly reliable. However, parts can be expensive, so it's vise to hav ze fund of slush ;)

There are 3 things that stop the wonderful noise from escaping .
Back boxes , X pipe resonator unit (mid box) and secondary cats .
Alter 2 out of the 3 for a really nice sound , alter all 3 to go completely ASBO .
I got an X pipe from Marios at Autoshield , sounded nice and let’s the pops and bangs out better on the over run , but still not quite there .
Then I saw a guy , Jason , advertising back box modification on E-bay .
I actually got hold of a second hand set and let Jason work his magic on them , he is a stainless steel fabricator by trade and I must say he has done a fantastic job , all polished up and repaired where necessary, the internals have been altered to let out a really gorgeous tone , no hint of a drone at all , Jason has modded quite a few Maserati exhausts and has got it spot on .
I love it .562725627356275

@Mike X I’ve just sent off a pair of 4200 rear silencers to Jason for modification and refurbishment. He’s been super helpful and I’m looking forward to hearing how they sound when paired with the Larini x-pipe I already have fitted.

It was your post above that inspired me, as I’d been considering various options for a while. Helped that I got a good price on a spare pair of used items for Jason to work his magic on!
