Gransport stock X-pipe vs. Coupe Resonator

This is supposed to be the factory "X-pipe" off the Gransport. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Is it me or does it look exactly like the Coupe's centre section (aka resonator)???

Thanks!

JP, the picture above is the Maserati OEM stock centre x box section, the same a the GS has, and probably the rest of the 4200's but I could be wrong on that one.

The below chart is from Eurospares for the 4200's "Central Silencer" which looks exactly the same...so have we been led to believe that the GS had a superior centre section over stock Coupes and Spyders???

Not from my knowledge JP , the two have always been identical all bar the rear boxes

the 2 cat/4cat scenario applies to both coupes and gransports

That is VERY interesting, because the guys on the US forum have been referring to the Gransport as having an X-pipe from the factory (albeit heavier and not polished like Larini's), while the coupe had a heavily muffled central silencer/resonator.

It also begs the question why my car was louder with this unit than when I installed the Larini H-pipe...the plot thickens!

Been following the thread on ML from day one they have always got the two mixed up Larini x pipe and the sport centre section they are now calling the H pipe

As far as im aware and both my 4200 coupe and the gransport have the same centre resonater, they really should forget about calling it an oem x pipe ITS a CENTRE RESONATOR perhaps then they wouldn't confuse the issue

I hear you Loz but Maserati did say, when launching the GranSport, that the 10hp increase over the Coupe was due to exhaust and air intake modifications. I think a lot of people assumed (for whatever reason) that the centre section of the exhaust was where the difference is, though now that I think of it, it's probably the back boxes (given the GS has different ones, with the flaps).

I am going to get my Italian connections going if the reply from Eurospares doesn't clarify the issue.

This is the underside of a US Coupe (4200).

Looks the same as the above part, and consistent with the image from Eurospares.

I have made a post on MaseratiLife to get someone to take a shot of their stock GS centre section.

We need to track down the initial post on ML that talks about a GS "x-pipe", as the more I think of it, the more I believe the actual difference in the exhaust is at the back, not the middle.

It's all your fault JP! Hahahahaha :D

Hi JP, just spoke to eurospares and they cant help , as yet they haven,t supplied or had a US one in stock to note any differences , but they assume the same as me that the difference will be internal rather than external to cope with the more stringent US emissions doesn't help i know sorry

I am thinking it may be just a case of lost in translation between the US and Euro guys.

Thanks for checking!

I am waiting on pictures from the US guys, and have also asked Buster67 to snap a picture when he goes to drop off his car at the garage (my centre section is being held there and is off my US-spec car).

Let's see!

Typical yanks why dont they just call it by its proper name its a centre resonater section saves all the trouble X and H pipes are terms used by Larini not maserati

JP, are cars in the UAE Euro-spec generally? If so, your mechanic should know if your car (US-spec) has a different set-up. Mind you, US-spec cars have 4 cats, rather than 2 right? So I figure there may not be the need for the resonator in US cars given a slightly lower airflow?

Forgive my clueless theory but figure it's worth a crack ;)

The UK GS has the same set up as the entire US 4200 I was lead to believe, with the exception of the valved rear boxes.

Buster67 is going to snap some photos while dropping his car off at the garage on Monday....let's see.

BF, your theory is interesting re: 2 vs. 4 cats....my car had 4, but now down to just the primaries.

US-spec Gransports do NOT have resonated centre sections

Just got this pic from my garage in Dubai. Looks like the US cars indeed had a genuine X-pipe, while the 4200s and Euro-spec GSs had a resonated version (literally the same section with a resonator on top).

Interesting discovery....

On that bombshell, I think I will revert back to the OEM X-pipe (I want my high pitched sound and pops and crackles back!) and will sell my Larini H-pipe to Buster67, who already has the Larini mufflers.

You learn something every day, thanks for clearing it up JP. Anyone know if you can buy it, might be of interest to some on here.

Whoa hold on JP , if you look at that picture( blow it up/ zoom in ) you can see where the resonator box used to be clamped on , i reckon its just been removed at some stage by a previous owner , further checking with the powers that be me thinks
