GranSport Rusty Rear

Hello folks, its been while since my last post - reflecting the times and the limited use Blue Donkey has had over the past year (which is why rats took up residence in the engine...a story for another time).

The rust underneath the rear lights has got to the point where I need to sort it - its spreading around the side too. It is going to need new metal and half-respray
(metallic blue / purple paint - oh joy). Does anyone have any recommendations regarding shops to go to? And if anyone has similar work done, what sort of ball park cost can I expect? Any advice gratefully received.

Here's to better times ahead.

Judging by the views to replies ratio it seems rusty rears aren't as common as I thought. So maybe I'm just unlucky...

I'm really surprised you have had no replies.
Depending on where you are I would ask one of the sponsors nearest to you as to who they would use.
Good Luck.

Hi Marwood

I think it may help if you posted a few photos of the extent of the corrosion and also where about in the country you are...

it is very common due to two grades of steel being used... hits both the GS and 4200.

Sports itali have a paint shop connection who did my front and rear bumpers recently

There’s a place in Manchester who Richard Grace recommend to me. Their work was very good. Can’t remember their name but I can find out.

Ross Packard Paintwork on the Hants/Dorset border is good and does work for Meridien Modena.

Agree it is very common but likelihood is it has got lost in the mists of time as it originally appeared at maybe 3-5 years old and once fixed back then it shouldn’t reappear. As such it occurring now would be unusual?

I live in Kingston, and have used County Coachworks in Kings Road. They are not cheap but very good. They do lots of insurance work and have done a few jobs for me small and major.

Ok friends, I promised some photos of the rust. Those of a sensitive nature should look away now...

I have mine done every 3-5 years, they also go round the wheel arches, and where the spray from the front wheels takes the paint off the wheel arch. door edges where the home secretary opens the doors into walls etc. Worth keeping an eye on the sub frames too.

My missus does that on mine too. She used to be particularly bad on the Autoroutes when paying the tolls. Apparently I didn't ever get close enough to the foot-high kerbs so that she could reach so she always used to open the door on to the fecking things. SANEF solved the problem in Europe but it still happens regularly over here. Can't learn them.

Certainly looks like badly treated and then filled. It will nearly always come back without new metal I imagine.

I think that area under rhe rear lights has a different type of alloy compared to the rest of the car, also the waterproofing under the lights is quite poor I reckon.

I doubt the 3200 has these issues, have seen it a lot on 4200s and mine has it pretty bad as well.
