GranSport Oil Pressure & friday

Chaps,

My Precious has a slightly worrying issue...

When the engine is at full temp, the oil pressure needle at idle drops (sometimes all the way to the bottom) before a small poke of the throttle brings it back up. Particularly prone after a bit of acceleration. Pressure and oil light both come on. There is, from time to time, noticable searching of the needle, less so on other occasions. On the upside (i hope), it seems the pressure is all the way past 5 under acceleration, I've checked oil and given it another litre of helix, sitting just under max on dipstick.

It did this for a few days, without a CEL, but the ******* came on last night. Booked in with Rob on Monday.

Any thoughts fellas? just a dodgy sender or more serious? She's been driving perfectly (as always!)

AND FINALLY, should I drive her 50 miles to Friday's meet? :conf4:

Chances are Simon that its the sender , common for them to go at some stage , A few have had similar symptoms to yours and its turned out to be the sender, , sometimes having the opposite affect , where the gauge is showing 3/4 bar at tickover , believe gullible recently had his done , hope its as easy as that mate , providing the oil and temp levels are good see no reason why it would be a problem

I jus had my sender replaced, as it always went to max, at idle, driving, even when I just started the car up............Since having it replaced it seems to give an accurate reading when at idle.

Hi Simon,
You say you have given it another litre of Helix and is now sitting just under max...
could it have been just a little low on oil and should settle down now?
probably good to get Rob to take a look,
Regards,
Enzo.

cheers fellas - no Enz, it made no difference mate...

Would a dodgy sender only throw a CEL after the problem had already been there a few days? (that's good from a diagnostic point of view I guess)

Should I drive it tmrw? my gut says the car is OK but who knows until it's checked?

stupid car - this is how it repays me for a clay bar!! :hammer:

Yep, sounds like the old sender gone dancing. I have just had mine done by Mike Roberts, it took him an hour.

Let us know how you get on. Oh, no it wont put a CEL on if its just the sender. You will probably have a flashing red light on your oil gauge though, just below the zero figure.

Only just picked these up chaps - cheers all - Well took it into Rob, job done as always - yes, a dodgy sender fixed in an hour - (coincidentally) the CEL came from a CAT temperature error - cleared, with no re-occurence. Found an additional small issue - the water temp resistor had fried meaning the fan wasn't kicking in on the low setting (but still working on full), meaning the water temp was creeping just past 90 meaning the car was running slightly hot, even without her regular beasting (useful to know methinks as not readily spottable). Got the oil and filter changed for good measure, 3 times in 10K now, but i need to look after my baby's inards - ooo i feel a clay bar coming on....

Indeed, its nice to know it fixed and its was not something more serious. Interesting what you say about the resistor, mines been running a bit hot of late, might have a gander, thanks for the heads up.

Looks like the same issue as my 3200 - full speed only, you would have thought they would have dealt with that after 2 car generations!

Great news Simon any ideas of the cost of the fixes individually, helps others to gauge an idea when having similar issues

First post here at SportsMaserati gentlemen... I'm a regular on Maseratilife.com but it seems that it's mostly a US based site (which is fine as I'm in the US). It also appears that there are more do-it-yourselfers here and a lot of really knowledgeable enthusiasts here.

I recently purchased an '06 GranSport and shortly after purchase, it developed this problem too with the oil pressure dropping to almost 0 and the oil pressure light flickering. It's still under warranty but it makes me feel uneasy to drive it at all so it's been sitting in the garage until my appointment at the dealer next Monday. The owners manual stated that that was normal if you have had the engine working at maximum output, but I was worried because I really hadn't.

After reading this post, I'm pretty sure that it's the oil pressure sending unit. I feel much better now.

Thanks!

Andrew...as ever, our USA based Maseratisti are more than welcome to this .....dare I say the premier Maserati forum......in the known world!!!!!

Hopefully it is this pesky sender, but best to get it fully diagnosed, hope it works out!

I'm sure you'll see more of me around here. Since I purchased an '04 Coupe last year, I've quickly decended into what can only be described as boarderline obsession with my Maserati. I've recently purchased an '06 GranSport which is under warranty for about 3 more months. I'm going to do a complete fluid change and have every issue that's covered repaired. After that, I'll try and do everything that I can myself. I just like bonding with the car so to speak.
