Gransport maintenance procedure - handbrake not engaged

I'm reading the service manual, P196 'If the car is laid up for long periods' and I notice it reads....

'Verify that the handbrake is not engaged'.

Can someone advise me what the rationale for this is?

Yes
The shoes will stick in the drums. Either it will then not disengage, or the shoes will delaminate jamming up the rear axle.

Oh, and keeping the cable under tension will simply stretch it.

If you're planning to garage the car, leave it in gear with the handbrake off. That's what I do.

Id go as far as suggesting no to leave it in gear but to choc a wheel instead....

My shoes decided to part company and ended up rattling around the hub and i never engage the handbrake but i do put it away in the garage after washing, still get them sticking a little even after full repalcements. Don't engage the handbrake for long periods

In essence the handbrake drums are anything but sealed or even close to the back plate allowing water easy access into the drums, putting the car away after washing it without driving it and warming the brakes through is a significant cause of anguish and rusting drums, sticking shoes. It is recommended to roll along a back street at around 20mph and pull up the handbrake till resistance or drag is felt, hold it on for about 10 seconds and then repeat after a period of cooling time. This will keep the surface rust off the drums and will polish the shoes a bit, it will also aid their fit to the drums a little. That said I have had the shoes stick on occasions but I park mine with the handbrake on all the time. Happy that the handbrake works; a rare thing on an Italian supercar!

Yep- that’ll glaze the sh1te out of your brake shoes for sure...!
I’ve had issues with the cable hardware seizing at the hub also. There are “cleats” on the cable ends (4200) that will go bad without regular servicing. And the weather/ heat shields ( not sure which as they’re useless in both cases) are prone to shearing and need replaced... I made my own after seeing ES wanted £42 a piece for them...!

Overall, I’d have to agree that the only way to keep the handbrakes working ( certainly the 32/42/GS) is regular use.. Don’t leave it on for long periods. Likewise, off for extended periods. Service it regularly.....
Anyone know where to buy shoes to fit a 4200?

Why the concern about glazing, back in the days of drum brakes they are used exactly in this way????
