After having a 4200 for two weeks with a Larini on I would have one if in was buying as the drone at motorway speeds was terrible.

That X pipe looks like a work of art, who’s the manufacturer? Is it the Larini one?
maybe JSP214 meant the picture posted by JonW? I like the look of that one. Could be the heroic pose with 'arms' held triumphantly aloft. .

The x-pipe now on mine was sourced through Ben (@BennyD) on this forum, and it was a very well made, well engineered thing. I had it fitted by Autofficina, and they were really impressed by it as well and said it was one of the best they’ve seen.

Alas no, (although it looks great too), I was talking about the one Zep posted.

Whilst I admit I'm no expert, in my defense I'd only viewed the photo on my phone. So hadn't picked up on the detail. Doh!!

Slightly off topic but the best sound I've heard was a 2008 Granturismo S with MC Shift, it made a glorious noise that to my ears has never quite been replicated by any of the after market stuff I've heard since. (I do appreciate that were talking about a 4.2 GS in this case).

Also, as much as I love the noise I would be concerned if it was a drone when motorway driving.

There's a lack of videos on H-Pipes in general, is it generally agreed that the H-Pipe keeps the OEM tone but amplifies it a little?

From what I've heard the X-Pipes turn the car into more of a screamer and much more Ferrari-like.

At risk of repeating myself, the X-pipe is fitted as standard, so if you replace it with one without a resonator it will sound like it does now, but a bit louder and with a few more crackles and pops.

The H pipe will sound like an American V8, more of a throbbing dirtier sound, quite unlike the original exhaust.

Neither of them will sound like a Ferrari, the firing order is different. If you imagine a Ferrari V8, with its flat plane crankshaft sounds like two four cylinder engines, in stereo, firing consistently slightly out of time. The cross plane crankshaft in the Maserati version of the F138 means that the timing of the cylinders is a-symmetrical, giving the off beat sound that most people associate with American V8s.

Thats true regarding the engine setup, obviously it will not scream like a Ferrari but some setups will make the car sound much higher pitched especially at high rpm.

If you look up the sound of a Mustang GT350, a car with a flat plane crank, you’ll notice it has the signature noise but its a much lower pitch than the Ferrari which i can only imagine is due to some exhaust trickery.

I had a listen, it sounds like a flat plane V8 with even timing between the pulses but with a deeper note than a Ferrari.

You need to separate the volume and tone from the music itself. In this parlance, the X-pipe is higher pitched and raspier, the H pipe is lower pitched and has a more defined thump.

Not a fan of any of the mod'ed exhausts to be honest. Volume rarely equals class. And isn't this meant to be a classy motor?
Depends on how you look at it, compared to a Ferrari or Lambo yea but a Maser is usually wilder than a Merc or the like.

A Merc needs to be shouty, because it's a boring Euro box that's trying to be something else. A Maserati, is a Maserati, and that alone makes the loudest statement.
Now, before someone points it out... yes, my Lotus is very shouty, and even has flames coming out the back. But that's ok, because it's not a Maserati

Have you got it back?

Surprisingly I agree with this - but then I’m not modding my exhaust to try and make it sound like a boy racer, or just to be louder.

The way I see it is my car has a V8 Italian racing engine - and by removing one set of cats, freeing it up to breathe and rev more freely, and getting rid of superfluous sound deadening material, I’m actually making it more representative of what it actually is meant to be like... and it’s a bonus that I really like the sound it makes :boss:

Its kind of a moot point to discuss loudness as Maserati made sure the GranTurismo screams so its only appropriate to make the GranSport as shouty as its younger brother. :)
