Just back from an hours blast over to Newlands Corner, and back via the country lanes... and am pleased I made the switch from H to X!

The car is definitely not quiet now, it feels as though it revs incredibly freely, and there are lots of pops and bangs on the overrun, plus a great higher pitched snarl when changing gear. Think I will live with it for a few months and see if I’m now done playing with the exhaust...

Anyone want to buy an H-pipe (a forum special, not branded?)

Are there any inherent benefits of having an X pipe over an H pipe? And do you get any performance benefits from putting either over the resonator?

Also the american spec cars are supposedly factory fitted with an X pipe. How loud is it when decatted?

I think C sounds the nicest, with A slightly behind it. My problem with C is as people mentioned it sounds a bit rattly while A is a much cleaner sound. A is a nice sound, but that low end burble is better suited for those brutish Jaguar V8s or american muscle cars.

I like it best when Maseratis have a baritone scream that reminds you a little bit that its a Ferrari related unit. :)

As mentioned before, all coupes have an x pipe as standard, the difference with the upgrade is that the resonator is not fitted.

Here is a visual aid

STD Factory Centre Section (X

Upgrade

There are benefits from both types, as deletion of the resonator reduces back pressure. X-pipes tend to be better for top end power and H-pipes for mid range torque. The differences are likely to be negligible without testing in controlled conditions.

I bought a full Larini system second hand consisting of front section, X Pipe, valved rears and remote control. I fitted them in stages to gauge the effectiveness of each.
Front section first, made the most performance upgrade with a sound improvement.
Rear boxes next, further improved the sound with another but lesser performance upgrade.
Sold the X Pipe unfitted as I heard from others it was too loud as a set.
Bought a H Pipe and rear connecting pipes from Larini. Fitted all including remote control.
Very Loud !!! and would sometimes get strange reactions in traffic. People wanting to race me or flash headlights if following.
Enjoyed for a year or more until my new work was situated opposite police headquarters, so refitted the centre resonator.
The H Pipe did add a little performance, so I could always refit for a track day.

I have Supersprint decats and the forum x pipe on my GS. So it's similar to option C although my car sounds less raspy than yours for some reason.

It's a good balance between some extra noise in sport mode and still keeping the drone away when not in sport.

I voted C, my second pick would be A. B sounds too much like an American V8 for me and doesnt fit the character of the car.

That X pipe looks like a work of art, who’s the manufacturer? Is it the Larini one?

It was just a stock picture I had hanging around. It’s not that nice, the welds look like I did them and they haven’t been linished back. By comparison the Larini is fully polished.

Interesting to see the range of opinions being expressed here... just goes to show how personal preferences vary.

I also learnt a new word - thanks to @Zep for “linished”… at first I thought it was a typo, but then I looked it up!

Interesting! I have just put my new h pipe on (courtesy of Benny) replacing my x pipe which was a bit bent after an incident with a rock..... Definitely louder and possibly more pops and bangs - more lower down muscle car growl now as others mention - loving it!

The H has a lower growl and less pops, the X is a higher pitched Ferrariesque system
