Option A - H pipe, rest is stock

Option B - H pipe, decat race pipes, stock back boxes

Option C - X pipe, decat race pipes, stock back boxes

I shall be going for a blast tomorrow to see what I think...

I have Larini sports cat's, Benny X pipe, and standard rear boxes and mine is loud. Considered gutting the rear boxes, but think it maybe a little too excessive.
Let us know what you decide

Option A
Both the decat options produce a nasty rasp akin the Jaguars, which as Clarkson pointed out, sounds like something is broken!

If A was louder, that’d be perfect.

At the moment I have custom made 200 cel sports cats, H-pipe, standard rear boxes, just doesn't seem loud enough, so might change the 'H' for an 'X' and see, then consider 'Jarens ' modified back boxes.

Definitely not A. Be interested to see what you think between B & C under load on the road.

I'm going to have decat secondary with standard silenced X pipe then Larini valved rears but not sure if the silenced x pipe will cause a slight imbalance or restriction.

Interestingly I suspect the decision will not be based on what it’s like under load... the H pipe and decat pipes sounds awesome when driving hard, especially at high revs in 2nd or 3rd. However, at other speeds it’s a little bit drony and makes the car sound (at least to me) like an American muscle car...

Out of interest; are the stock back boxes with valves open or closed....?

Poor neigbours! C, the H pipe sounds too amercian muscle car for me. The X, more Italian exotica.

I go with B. Let's not forget the fabulous on road performance improvement the decat race pipes provide. The standard front pipes are so restrictive. B & C lets it breathe.

I agree with you re the decat race pipes... the way the engine revs so much more freely is incredible.

I don’t really know enough about how exhausts work to know if there is a similar difference between the H and the X, but based on a fairly short drive yesterday it felt like there might be?

C all the way for me, a good test drive is recommend, I had an H but couldn’t get on to with it after a two hour drive.

I agree with Tim... A and leave something to the imagination. B and C sound like you might be scattering valves behind you, rather like my neighbour's Vauxhall Astra.

The video will presumably be normalising sounds levels so hard to tell which is louder relatively speaking, but I'd go for tone-less-drone any day.

Did you try X with the rest standard?

I think you’re right about the video normalising the sound, as the differences don’t sound as big on the clips as they do in real life.

I have not tried just the X-pipe on its own as this has been a bit of a fettling process.

When I first bought the car it was completely stock, and I drove it that way for about 3 months before I put the H-pipe on it, I then drove it like that for maybe another 6 months before I decided to buy the Larini de-cat pipes, and I’ve just swapped the H-pipe for the X-pipe on this week...

i don’t mind the car being loud as it’s purely a weekend toy for me, but I’m trying to get to a higher pitched sound and to eliminate some of the drone / rumble when driving at low revs.

I think that an X-pipe will offer up more in the aural range you are after. Funny to think that you could essentially end up with what Maserati produced on the production line....! Ok, your x-pipe will be non resonated; and there are some subtly different designs wherein the X is fettled to produce more of a Siamese 'melding' over a straight railroad crossover. (Im out of my depth again...)
As I liked A the best, I think the X-pipe swapped out, & the standard system with switchable back boxes may prove the better compromise, if like me you fear feeling somewhat conspicuous making that much noise.

Speak quietly and carry a big stick.....;)
