GranSport Audio head unit change to wireless CarPlay

My GranSport has already had the audio hacked about and presently has a Kenwood KIV-700 unit in it. Not that I ever use it but prefer to listen to the V8 soundtrack. I'm frustrated by the fack that the gorilla that did the 'upgrade' screwed the door cards to the tweeters fall out constantly! Also the polythene moisture film in the doors blows around at speed which is very distracting!

I want to fit a single DIN with a pop-out 7" screen into the existing slot with full CarPlay via bluetooth ideally (understand this is not really possible with bluetooth limitations) mostly so I don't need to keep the phone to hand or sliding around all over the place. I'd like to setup a lightning cable in the glovebox or somewhere.

My question is: Is the present in-windscreen aerial DAB compatible? Presumably also the many connections will be universal nowadays? Car audio is really not my thing so any help is appreciated.

No, when I changed my HU it came with a seperate DAB antenna which sticks to the front screen. I put it on the left hand side where it is mostly covered by the a post trim.

If the GS antenna/screen is similar to the 4200 an unamplified splitter works just fine.
Something like:

The NIT end of the factory cable looks like this:

Suspect the GS Becker connection will be similar. In which case you'll also need a male ISO to DIN adaptor to fit the splitter.

If the GS connection is anything like the NIT you may need to drill a few small holes in this adaptor to fit the factory connector.
Cant' recall if I just pressed it in tbh - either way I taped the joint for piece of mind.

Or, as above, use the supplied antenna and route the cable.

I put a DAB aerial in the windscreen you can just see it top corner passenger side.

The one downside I found with DAB was unlike FM when the reception goes and it’s gets crackly, DAB goes completely.

Although not what you want my priority was just something that matched, you can change the colour so it blends with the rest.

PS I did find there’s not a lot of room behind the radio, the wiring is really tight between the back of the radio and heater so be careful how much the aerial and connectors stick out.

The self adhesive DAB antennas work. Sort of. I had in one of the cars. DAB reception round here is lousy anyway but it was pretty rubbish with the included one. I did consider getting a better one, but never got around to it.

OTOH the Jaaaaaaag does DAB really well. And yes, when it goes, it goes dead. Which is not entirely surprising.

Well I've only gon an bought one....

PIONEER AVH-Z7200DAB 7" MULTIMEDIA PLAYER WITH APPLE CARPLAY, ANDROID AUTO, DAB/DAB+ RADIO

The plan is to have the lightning cable in the glove box so the phone can sit in there getting charged and a GPS signal but I'm sure to find out if that works or if I still need to have it out on a mount somewhere.

Having pulled the Kenwood unit this morning there is still the old Modulbox lurking in there somewhere from the Becker, I may strip it out if I find it, seems mine had the phone originally. Anyone managed to house a microphone in the OEM housing on the mirror?

I used to put them at the top of the A-pillar. Dead easy to tuck the cable in and works just fine

Top of the pillar too. I’d be worried about breaking the housing in the mirror trying to get in to it.

But if you find the original phone box maybe the microphone will just be a jack plug and you can put it into the new system.

Not quite Carplay but I ended up going with this pioneer unit that holds your phone.

I found it fits well onto the look of the car.

One other alternative I liked was the Porsche classic radios but $$$

no such luck, it is 6 or 8 pin plug like the d house phone to the handset!

Confused me now, chap!

Confused myself there Chris, thought I replied to the right one and meant to reply to Oneball!

I really like the look of this Alpine iLX-F903D for the Gransport, a single DIN body but a double DIN screen with full Apple CarPlay.

However, I fear that despite being able to adjust the screen up and down as necessary it will still simultaneously obscure the HVAC controls above and the start / hazard buttons below the head unit.

Or there is this much cheaper alternative from JVC, (model KD X560BT), which has a 3" screen and so also allows a reverse camera to be fitted.

Christ , you need to do your buttons Netwon . They look like they have been smeared with jam.
And change your start and hazzard buttons around . It makes things easier for right hand drive .
