Grancabrio Cooling Fan Issues

Hi All,

Hoping somebody on here can help as I've had this ongoing issue for since September 2018.

Not sure if there is any relevance (probably coincidence) but the problem began after I took the car to get a ceramic coating on the paintwork. I started it up and within 5 minutes of running the cooling fan came on, very loudly!

Since then, within 5 to 10 minutes of driving, as soon as it hits 90 degrees, the fan comes on and pretty much stays on for the duration of the journey. It is always the high speed fan, and people have mentioned it sounds like a hovercraft approaching!! It is very loud and embarrassing as it draws attention for all the wrong reasons!

I have taken it to 4 separate local garages (including a Jag dealer that deals with Maseratis) and they have all told me that the fan is coming on when it should and that both fans are working. They say that it is doing it's job and keeping the engine cool.

I drove this car from January to September last year, right through the hot summer, and never had this issue! The mechanics try to fob me off with "perhaps your music was on so loud that you couldn't hear it" etc...

It has recently been serviced and had new filters etc..

Does anybody have an idea why the fan would be so loud and stay on after around 5 minutes?

The garages have run diagnostic tests and said everything is working properly and that no faults are showing.

I've looked on other forums for possible fixes. Some have spoken about broken relays etc but the garages have told me that there isn't a fault..

The nearest Maserati garage is nearly 2 hours drive away so that is really a last resort. I'm hoping to find a solution on here if possible?

My 4200 had the same problem. Just required a new ballast resistor. Which is a cheap easy fix.

I’ve had 2 GC’s and the fans come on easily, I was told it was down to them cooling a big lump of a motor. As the temp gauge never moved into the danger zone I figured the fans are doing their job. I must say though that once moving at a decent speed it goes off, only in slow moving traffic does it come on, and yes it’s loud.

Try turning the AC off and see if the problem ceases. AC may be low and overworking the system trying to achieve the desired cooling.

Saying that it does sound like the resistor but the AC is a simple check and worth ruling out.

Well I'm pleased to say the problem is solved!

I was loathed to do any work on it myself - and possibly cause more harm than good! I figured that the garages I had taken it to must have checked all the obvious solutions, turn out I was wrong (which is a little worrying!).

Checked the fuse box and both the cooling fan fuses had blown! I have replaced them now and it is back to normal!

Couldn't be happier! But think it's time to find a new garage!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Main dealers... would not trust them to hand out the correct brochure.

Well, to be fair that's in their nature...

Sorry sir, did I give you the brochure for the model up? My mistake, honest, "cough"! But just look at what you get, for only £×××× more! And on the payment scheme that's only pennies a day extra............

Could you be more specific about what the fuses are numbered? Mine does exactly the same, main dealer said working as intended, and it is really frustrating as the secondary fan is very loud.
T15 and T16?

Thanks!

I have a similar problem and seeking advice.

My 2011 model GranCab has the fan cut in and out for short periods from stone cold. I checked both fuses and OK. I noted in this thread to try with aircon on and off and it only seems to happen with the full climate control on.

Did it today and not very hot weather about 14c, so is it the relays do you think?

If so, I took a picture of them as attached. I assume they are a common item and I don't need to get them from Maserati but rather just any auto 56489electrical factor?

Yes, had the AC on when starting up and fan cut in and out a couple of times within a minute of starting and engine stone cold. Turned A/C off and it stopped doing it as engine warmed up.

I think that's the normal operation of the AC. Doesn't sound like the same issue at all, to me.

Thanks Catman. So the cooling fan should cut in and out with A/C on, even if the engine is stone cold?

Even simpler, where are the cooling fan fuses located? Can’t find my manual and online searches send me all over!
