Gran Turismo 4 year service

My GT Sport is coming up to 4 years old (and 25000 miles) and so I have just had a call from my supplying dealer asking me to book in the 4 year service ...... at a cost of over £2900. Now this seems excessive to me (especially as best I can tell the, the only difference between 2 years and 4 years is the carbon canister and lambda sensors) but I have a Maserati warranty until March 2022.

So, some questions:

* Maserati warranty is widely slated on here but I have it and it provides some piece of mind. Does anyone know if it is a condition of the warranty that I have it serviced by a Maserati MD. I'm guessing that even though an independent would do as good a job, it would be the excuse needed by Maserati not to honour any claim?

* Do the carbon canister and lambda sensors actually need changing?

* I'm looking at having CarPlay fitted which will invariably be enough to invalidate the warranty so where's the harm in having a 2 year service done by an independent, pocketing £2000 and putting towards anything that goes wrong within the remainder of the warranty period?

* Or am I being tight?

I did the carbon canister and binned off the lambdas. And I bet on 150k miles it’ll still be ticking along on the same lambdas.

Warranty though which means you’ll probably have to suck it up so as not to give them room to wriggle out of something?

I am absolutely certain that the law changed and they cannot insist on MB servicing for the warranty, an indi would have to do the full service as per the schedule and use OEM parts.
I would get quotes and go back to the MD and negotiate.

Quite correct.

It’s also spark plugs too and we agree, Lambdas not required till 12 years/70k miles.

I would always do the carbon canister every 4 years too.

My Stradale had its 4 year service at a main Maserati dealer at the end of October and the cost was £2,399 so there’s your max point before you really start negotiating. Good luck!

Notwithstanding that the Lambdas don't need doing, I presume that, if I want to retain any possibility of keeping the warranty going, they would have to be done by an independent?

£1750 including VAT for a full (as per Maserati schedule) 4 year service from an MD? If yes, please point me in their direction as that is cheaper than a number of specialists / well regarded independents!

Even Dale at Prestige (who doesn't have workshop overheads) is over £2000 https://www.prestigeautoworks.co.uk/maserati-servicing
Graypaul quoted me that price last year for a two year let alone a four year. I got them down a few hundred but they always get you with extras, certainly once your car has some miles on it.

I paid something similar for a 4 year service a couple of years ago.

The MD basically said that they wouldn't stamp the service book unless they changed the Lambdas - if Maserati say it needs doing then we have to do it. I guess if you didn't get it done when required in the manual and the paperwork said that it might cause an issue if you wanted to sell on?

Mrs Hawk is very concerned about losing (what will be) almost a years warranty just to save a few quid so the service will definitely be done to Maserati specification - including the Lamdas.

So the question I now need to answer is MD or independent ....which is dependent on many factors.

In mine they wrote 2 year service plus carbon canister.

@V8time - tell me more about this £1750 service. What was done and by whom?

I was quoted £3926.69 for the major (4/8 year) service by Maranello in Egham. They told me the reason for the cost was the lambda sensors and carbon canister. A pure licence to print money for sure. SportsItalia did the service, and a much better job than a MD for a much cheaper price (Over £2k cheaper!).

Fortunately for the dealer I bought the car off, it was him paying for the service so he saved a lot of cash, I had the car serviced very well and had a full inspection done too with a couple of fixes (cam cover gaskets and exhaust hangers) that the dealer also paid for.

Oh, and I had an XPipe fitted at the same time too - that I paid for.

Can't faut GT2 in Cranleigh who I bought the Granturismo from. Very professional and courteous.

Shop around and tell them you are doing exactly that. I’ve just had £1000 knocked off the first quote when I told them a) the 1st price was surely wrong & 2) a well known and respected indi had been much more competitive. It might work.

I have already done what you suggest but for me, this isn't about saving money. I still have; unlike most people approaching the 4 year service, a year's warranty remaining and I want to be as confident as possible that I preserve this.

As I have said above, Dale at Prestige charges over 2,000 for a 4 year service to Maserati standards and I haven't found anyone cheaper than that. Maserati MD starting point seems to be around 800 more .... which is my starting point to haggle (and I have got this down).

For the sake of a few quid (let's say 400), I would rather have a Maserati MD stamp.

But I am interested in hearing from V8time about his 1750 service and if this was to Maserati spec (including both cannister and lambdas) and if it was a a MD.

I used to share that view but in recent years I value independents higher than MDs, whether Maserati, Porsche, BMW and certainly LR!

If warranty wasn't in the mix (and I apply this all my cars and motorbikes) my vehicles go nowhere near a main dealer.

If the cheapest Indy is over £2k then I can’t complain at my MD’s £2.4k price from the end of October. I had the same warranty concerns this time round but if they remain competitive post warranty then I‘ll stick with them.
