Not sure how it works now with the EU etc, but at worst case you will have to pay duty on bringing it over and apply for the usual registration and appropriate test (MOT lights etc). They do it on Wheeler dealers, better if you can drive it back if road worthy as in places like Germany the tests are quite strict so would have thought you only need the paperwork and insurance to bring back.

Not sure if you can delay in paying the duties as who is to say it's being imported when you drive off the ferry/ train? There is some law that if still in place says that the car should be registered as being permannetly kept here after a period of time (can't remember the details)
