Ghibli Starts but Stalls

Morning,

I taxed it on Saturday and thought i would take it out, but it wasn't to be.

Car started fine, revved smoothly but when you took your foot of the accelerator it just stalled.

Before getting it out the garage again, any pointers of things to look at ?

thanks

Stewart's just had this on the Zagato Spyder- we were talking about it yesterday at Hopetoun.

Was this when it was cold, Dr N..?

Throttle-bypass-valve?

What Zam said.

was it warm or cold?

Vacuum leak or idle control would be my first guesses.

thank you.

Yes when cold.

I will open the bonnet this afternoon, do we think the Valve needs cleaning / replacing ?

i think i have a spare in the Garage from an Escort Coswrth if i recall.

Will report back.

thanks

I’ll take a punt……

As suggested it could be a vacuum issue, so would not rule out a dodgy Diverter valve. The Ghibli has two and the plastic diaphragms can split. In the very distant past when owning an Audi S4 (B5) and Fiat Coupé (which I now own again), Diverter valve failure was common and can show up as the engine stalling when lifting off the throttle, for example when slowing down or coming to a stop. Normally this issue presents itself earlier than this, in the form of boost dropping off when under acceleration, which worsens over time.

Like I say it’s just a punt once you’ve checked the above recommendations

Thanks for the suggestion !

I took the diverter valves out one didn't look to right so i "took it apart" - it wont go back together now but it was damaged anyway.

It always leads to where did it go, but it is soft rubber should have done any damage.

I don't believe this is the stalling issue but obviously something that needs fixing.
Bosch part number 0 280 142 102

Will remove and clean the idle valve next.

Thanks

That’ll be giving you a vacuum leak so it won’t be helping.

Not knowing a mass about turbos but blow off valves are sized so there’s presumably an optimum fo a engine so maybe that just fiddles an off the shelf one to be right.

It’s the plastic diaphragm inside that perishes over time and splits. It certainly won’t have helped and will give you a lack of boost, which gradually worsens over time. Get these replaced and then see if all problems are cured.

it is a pig to remove with the manifold still on the car.

Removed the intake pipes and the "y" piece - McGraths have the "y" piece gasket in stock so i will be a new one of those aswell. A couple of connectors and boost pipes.

It looked a bit dirty some fine dust and oil, the one i had as a spare was broken so have ordered a new one.

vae06 idle control valve: Search Result | eBay

£55.

The car should then idle and boost properly !!

I might have reached a time when there isn't a pending job, bar one of the rear cam covers leaking again !!

I wouldn’t expect to see any dust, oil yes, dust no. Might be worth checking there aren’t any leaks or splits between the filters and the valve.

i had the manifold shot blasted and painted a few years ago.

Despite putting it in the dishwasher there may have been a tiny bit of dust left ?

Maybe, (don’t like blasting engine components for that reason) but worth a check as you’ve got an idle problem.

This can't be a leak, when you open the throttle it makes leak much more than a leak.
It's a richness problem: throttle sensor TPS, temperature sensor ATS WTS, pressure sensor MAP, fuel pressure regulator dead or its hose.

Diverter valves are ahead the throttle, they can't affect the engine itself, only turbos and boost level. You can drive these cars without hoses ahead the throttle: there won't be any boost but they'll run correctly.

The vac feed to the valve is engine side of the throttle body. With the diaphragm holed it will be leaking and that will cause an idle issue, might not be the hole story but it won’t be helping.

The vac can leak but this does not impact what happens when you press the accelerator, or it's the opposite: when throttle is opened the relative impact of the leak decreases.
99% of problems in transients are related to the acceleration enrichment, means richness.

Is the suggestion that when you press the accelerator the effect of the leak is reduced ?
That is what happens, if i hold the revs at 1500 it is fine, but stalls when you release it

I will try with a new ICV and BOV and see what it does then

Throttle-bypass-valve?
My issue seems to be when it not fully up to temperature.
Starts ok from cold or fully hot but will sometimes die on lift off and reluctant to start when partially warm. Perhaps a different issue?

Temperature sensor? (Coolant/and airtemperature) Measure their values. Have you measured the exhaust-gasses?
