ghibli starter motor

This morning the RAC guy diagnosed my Ghibli has a faulty starter motor. It just clicks when I turn the key like a flat battery. I have a new battery so not that. He did the usual checks and was sure it was the starter motor.
Anyone had the same issue or needed to replace the starter ?

Any comments or help will be useful before I take it somewhere.

Cheers Ian

Hi Ian - this is not uncommon, and is indeed likely to be a duff starter motor. The originals are weak and not up to the job for long. You can replace it for a new Maser one, but it'll be expensive and still weak. Better is to have your failed one restored, but with stronger internals. Chat with Emblem, they did this job on my Ghibli about a year ago.

Evening,

Jim and i are experts on this, whereabouts are you ?

I can get the starter out in 45mins - if you want to attempt it we can work through it.

Hey Ian,

OK first things first- 'you can do it" as they say.

Are you up for an adventure?

At the highpoint- it looks like this!

When Emblem tackled my starter motor, they sent it away for a specialist repair/rebuild. This was £125.

But to access it you have to drain the coolant, remove the inlet manifold and remove the coolant pipe. After re-fitting the starter motor you reverse the process and fill with fresh coolant. So, it's a bit more of a job than it might be! Their charge for this was about £400.

So, by the time you add a few ancillaries (such as a new pipe, O rings, seals etc and Vat) you're probably looking at about £650.

Yes but you are richer than me !

The 3200 owners buy their Starter motor from Andrew Page in Leeds I think - Bosch one for about £60. I paid £80 from SC Motor Factors in Kent. You do need some "O" rings for the bottom of the manifold. Meridian have them for about £1.50 each and there are 6. Look in the 3200 section for starter motor details and get the o rings from meridian.

I live near Dartford and in exchange for a cup of tea I would be happy to come over one evening and guide / assist.

Tools you need are socket set with nice hex bits, extendable shaft magnet, 13, 14, 17 and 19mm spanners. Lots of rags and something to catch fuel in.

Let me know if you fancy having a go.

I'll remember this!!

P.S. you actually don't need to drain the coolant- I didn't anyway...

I think the coolant pipe would go back on if removed- the one that isn't as enthusiastic afterwards and needs replaced is the link to the brake servo. All of 4" long at the lower back on the left of the manifold... No.5 on the diagram

The DiIY option is indeed cheaper. If nothing else, it keeps you busy for a while so you're not stuck in a smart restaurant quaffing a nicely chilled Premier Cru Chablis:)

And just imagine how cold it must be in Jim's garage up there in Tartanshire!

159.jpgNot personally- but they are a little far for me

I think 'recon' is supposed to be 'better than new' as was said to me. As they are made by Bosch than than Citroen (Valeo)!

here's my recon one...

The Bosch one seems to be the way to go and it is cheaper than geting your's reconditioned.

I have never used Grimaldi but they have an excellent reputation.
