First post on here, so nice to meet everyone.

I've always fancied a Ghibli II, I was a teenager when they were sold new and they made a lasting impression on me.

I recently decided to get one, but there's not a lot of choice in Greece, and what there is, is either crash damaged or poorly maintained.

After going through a few cars, I decided that finding one in good shape was a no go, so I had to bite the bullet and get a rough one to restore.

I ended up with a 96 GT, with 185k km which I got at a very good price, so I could afford to invest on it.

The car was very rough both visually and mechanically, but it was not accident damaged and everything seemed to be working.

First step was to remove the engine, to assess it's condition.
The reveal was shocking, the heads were horribly corroded and pitted beyond repair.
Amazingly this engine was working well, building boost, maintaining temperature, it even passed an mot a month before disassembly.
We decided to source a healthy set of heads and proceed with a full rebuilt of the engine.

With the engine work in progress we removed the shocks, steering rack and radiators which were all sent to be rebuilt.

The firewall insulation was removed and it revealed further horrors.
There was significant corrosion, with parts of metal completely missing.

The fire wall and wheel wells were completely stripped, the offending parts were cut out and replaced, the whole area was resealed and painted using the factory colour.
The result was rather pleasing.

Then came the time for reassembly.

Back to the present, the car is undergoing a full respray, as there was bubbling in various panels and we wanted to get ahead of things to avoid further deterioration.

Lovely! Great to see a Ghibli II being brought back from the brink. Amazing that despite the engine's internal condition she was till running strong!

Congrats, nice work!

That head looks terrible indeed, how could it happen?

I'm just going through some of these as well, but probably in a much slower pace than you. Do you know the color code you used for the engine bay? I couldn't find it, so just tried to find a matching one.

Well Done indeed and nice to see on the other side of the world.
Those cylinder heads wow.
What was the coolant like in the system ?
Make sure you get the radiator checked and flushed too.

Alarming amounts of rust on a Greek car, that must be quite unusual to see. Very nice repair work, the car will be awesome once you've finished it.

your car looks to be a MY94 (ABS) rather than a GT due to the position of the fuel hose in the engine bay - MY94 has the fuel hose on the right side, GT has the fuel hose on the left side. Does the rear differential have an oil cooler?

Coolant?
You must mean the water :p
There was no coolant whatsoever in there, just plain water, probably what caused the corrossion.
Amazing indeed it was still running.
The radiator was cut open and rebuilt after cleaning each cell.

I learned that the previous owner used to park under trees and was not really bothering with cleaning drain holes etc.
There was a huge buildup of muck, all the drain holes were blocked and water had found its way between the bulkhead and insulation, hence the rust there.
Bulkhead was repaired and new 4mm Teknofibra was installed. Amazing material if anyone is planning on doing anything similar.
The rest of the car was surprisingly clean.

I know, there are some contradictions with this car. It has the latest rear subframe with the Ferrari diff, latest instrument binacle, but the fuel hoses are the wrong way round. Maybe an early GT?

Can't help with the colour code, sorry, we went ahead with matching the original paint as well.

Maserati often just used whichever parts came to hand so its possible that your car had some earlier parts fitted. Usually an early GT (from May 1995) would feature a rubber fuel hose on the left side of the engine bay and would have the dummy fuel filler on the left side, on later GTs the fuel hoses were metal braided and the dummy fuel filler was deleted. I guess it could also be possible that your car has had a replacement engine from an earlier car or is a MY94 that has had some GT parts fitted at a later date. It could also be that it left the factory that way although I've never seen a GT with the fuel pipe on the right side.

I had similar challenges trying to figure out if mine was an early GT or not. I discovered that nothing was black or white with Maserati back then but there were some pretty strong signs - and only the experts would truly know.

Results starting to look promising.

I'm not an expert, but to my eyes the body shop seems to have done a fairly decent job.
They did one coat of paint and three coats of clear lacquer.
There is already a deep shine, without any specs or blemishes.

Next week we'll start putting together the remaining body panels and interior.

The leather has already been redone, but the headlining and carpets are still on the to-do list.

Hopefully we will be up and running soon now.

Wow, that is absolutely stunning, congratulations. Beautiful colour combination too, is is Verde Tundra?
