Hi everyone.
I'm a newbie here, my name is Jamie.

I've been away from cars for about 18month due to having a child & saving for my wedding. Now that the wedding is over I'm starting to get the itch for something special :)

I've had a thing for the Maserati Ghibli since seeing one in performance car when I was 13years old & now 20years later I'm on the hunt for genuine info on buying/ running one.

Has anyone on here had any direct ownership experience, good or bad that you could share with me as I'm thinking of going to look at one tomorrow (it's only 40mins from where I'm working & it would be rude not to go see it )

The car I'm going to look at is at a garage in Hertfordshire the reg number is N965 TLJ & is a red GT Manual. Does anybody know this car?

Thanks in advance

Jamie

as far as i know, thats the one thats been patched up on the sills etc, you may be better off finding an original one, because it will always be known within the enthusiasts as the rusty one

Hi Jamie, and a big warm welcome to the forum...The red car as you can see is not the best. I went to see that car back around 2006/2007 and I was sent many pictures of the sills riddled with rust. Although this has been put right you never know what is hidden once they started to go this bad......It's not that tidy from what a member has said and I probably isn't worth much more than 5k let alone the 8k plus they are asking for the car. Go and look by all means but if it was me I would wait for another one...IT's a real shame as it does look great in red.

I'll just wait and save for another one. I won't go look at it as if I do I'll end up coming up with a plan to save it, that would lead to divorce & madness though lol

I would say- if you haven't actually sat in one before; that it is actually worth going to see.

I saw a guy with a Series 1A auto once years ago in advance of a prospective GT purchase. It's good to have a comparison- make sure you fit in it, that kind of thing...

I hear what you say, I've bought cars in the past that I have found uncomfortable after the fact. I've had to go down to Edenbridge to do a little job & may call in on the way back to Yorkshire if I get done early enough.
I'm wondering if anybody had a proper inspection done on this one to assess the rust issue & other faults?
I'm just thinking that I have no problem with sinking £000's into old VW Golfs & wondered if it would be possible to take the same approach? Is it worth saving or is it too far gone?

Hello Jamie & welcome along. We're all a right friendly bunch here with lots of knowledge to be had.
I went to see the red one too and as has been suggested, it's worth going along just for comparisons sake and to be honest, I've seen worse.
One of the forum sponsors David Askew had a nice silver '94 model for sale a few weeks ago, it would be worth giving him a call to see if he still has it. Low mileage, a lovely colour and David knows more about Maseratis than most of us have forgotten so it's well worth a call. It could be bought for under £7k from memory. Good luck

I think Ian Roberts had McGrath Maserati do an inspection on the red car about a month. Let's put it this way, it would be easy to spend quite a lot of money on it. But, do go and see it and drive, just so you get the feel of/for a Ghibli. They are unlike any car you'll have driven before....

Do call David Askew. I bought my first Maserati from him (a Ghibli) almost 20 years ago. And here I am now, 14 Maseratis further on!

Hi Jamie, It was indeed me who got seduced by the red & cream one, I had the inspection even after the advise and reading the threads on here. Go and see it if its local but dont get caught up making offers on it. I did make an offer subject to the inspection at McGraths ........ and found that at any cost the restoration makes it uneconomical compared to a good one. I would say keep open the channels of communication with the good people on here and a good one will turn up. It happened to me and Ewan put me on contact with a seller and I am now mr happy with a keeper for life.
Cheers Ian

Thanks for adding to the thread Ian. I'd already decided not to go anywhere near the red one, too many people know that it's a potential moneypit & they know far more about these cars than me.
I've started another thread as my circumstances at home have changed today & the hunt may be put on hold for a while :(
