Gearbox types spreading 45 years

The Mrs has just changed her Volvo V40 D4 for a new VW Golf GTD 184, and the only option was the DSG gearbox.
With the 5 cars in the household, everyone is different regarding the gearbox, spreading 45 years.

1974 Triumph Stag 3 speed automatic
2000 Mitsubishi Pinin 4 speed automatic lockup overdrive
2002 Maserati Coupe 6 speed robotised manual
2017 BMW M140i 6 speed manual
2019 VW Golf GTD 7 speed DSG

So nearly have most types apart from say a 8 speed automatic.

They all drive so differently.
Not sure about the Golf yet, being a diesel it has a short rev range power band with so many gears. With the torque at low revs it launches so quickly and zipps through the gears, and this causes the problem with speeding too fast with no effort.
In comparison the BMW being turbo 6 also has torque at low revs but a massive power rev range, with less gears. Because you are in control of the gears, you can control the speed more easily because you are lifting off between gear changes, and can hold a gear. Yes the Golf has paddles, but if you use them in manual mode, too many gears over too short a powerband.
For sure the Mrs will have to careful not to speed!
It is clever though, reading speed limit signs and constantly pinging at you to slow down!
Maybe the next car in the household will have no gearbox, being electric?

Weirdly my last three cars; TVR, Maserati and M3 have all had the same 6 speed Getrag.

Also have a 4 speed manual, 7 speed auto and a 5 speed bike with left side change and neutral at the bottom.

Never really thought about which is best, only really notice the things that I don’t like about each.

As you say I’m waiting to try something electric

Very interesting and the more cars I drive the more I realise how different they drive. Even identical models.

I'm guessing mine must be quite varied as well. I'll see if I can detail.

I had a Nissan X Trail for a year off Enterprise... it had a CVT gear box ( 2017 car).

Hated the box... always felt you were reving the nuts off it.... some of the *** hybrids have them too.
