Gearbox and transmission oil

G'day Aussie Maser owners. My 4200 is in being serviced and whilst chatting to my local independent mechanic her in Hobart, we got onto the subject of gearbox and transmission fluid, both of high are due to be changed. He tells me that the only place you can get the right oil is from the main dealer in Melbourne at an appropriately extortionate price and I was wondering if this was true?

Has anyone else on the forum found this to be the case and if not may I ask where you purchased the alternative and what the approximate price was?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Not a problem to get from any good motor factors, spec is in the owner's manual and equivalents are available.

Your mechanic is correct. Zagame in Melbourne is like all main dealers, prohibitively expensive for everything. The oil specs. in the handbook are recommendations only,so any oil meeting the viscosity & service specs is fine. Bear in mind that oil quality has moved on quite a bit since your 4200 was designed so don't bother too much about the recommendations. And,there's nothing fancy in a Maserati that needs "special" oils. (Note to self : Hold breath & wait for the avalanche of criticism from the oil nerds)

I used Nulon Full Synthetic 75W-90 Performance Smooth Shift Manual Gearbox and Transaxle Oil. Hasn't skipped a beat since. I think it is smoother than the previous oil. Granted, I have no idea how long it was in there for.

Personally wouldn't go near any dealership selling OEM parts and service items.

Always end up paying up to 10 times the amount compared to doing some research.

Speak from experience.
