Funny or clever number plates

My first "dealings" with an Italian car was my Dad's Fiat 132 (Auto with plush velour interior!). He bought and I presume sold it with a private plate on it: 3181 BB. We knew it as Big Bertha.

I got passed by a Bentley Continental on the M6 near Preston wearing it about 10 years ago. Thought the plate did better for itself than any of us!!

As an aside, my Mam tried to squeeze the Fiat through a gap between a car and a coal wagon, resulting in the rear door being tied on with wool and a 6/7 year old me having to hold it in place while we drove home. My Dad's face was a picture when we pulled up. :)

I have strong memory of seeing PEN15 (or possibly PEN1S) in a car-park at Heathrow, on a Merc, I think, but neither seem to be registered with the DVLA.

It was 'PEN 15' - it belonged to Steve Parrish, who had it on several cars over the years. When it was on his SL500 I shared the drive back from Nurburgring with him one year; I was doing the on-board computers on his Mercedes race-trucks at the time. As we drove through the customs sheds at Dover at about 2 am, every one of the customs staff we saw nearly wet themselves when they saw it - and every one of them ran off into a back room so that we wouldn't see them laughing!

Steve had an on-going 'war' with a neighbour - and in response to Steve jacking up his Roller and leaving it on blocks after nicking his wheels, said neighbour snuck up one night and replaced the rear plate on the Merc with 'FAN 1E'. He only found out when his good lady drove into the local town (Bedford?) a couple of days later where she was berated by some miserable old sod who said that it was quite disgusting her having such rude plates on her car!

I have no idea what happened to the plate - I haven't seen Steve for a couple of years.
