fuel filler cover solenoid replacement

(4200 Coupe GT)

It's not long since I had to replace the solenoid for the boot release so I shouldn't be surprised to find the fuel filler cover release solenoid has also given up the ghost in a similar way - release button works, solenoid pulls and releases the cover but won't relax after the current is off.

Symptom therefore being that you can't re-latch the fuel cover.

Managed to gently jam the cover with a bit of rag to get home and then released the locking tab by wiggling with some pliers but can feel that the solenoid is all gunked up and notchy.

I will order a new solenoid but the question is; can I get to the solenoid from the boot after removing some covers (I can almost see it through the battery cover hole) or do I need to remove the rear seats/parcel shelf which I've seen here:

Any comments appreciated before I have a go - suspect it'll be a week or more before the part arrives so not going to rush to dig into it and will just make do with the pliers until then!

Rear seats for access. But from memory I had the same problem on my 3200 and it was the rubber seal around the catch jamming it, nothing wrong with the solenoid

My fuel flap was "sticky" because the return spring had become rusty and full of gunk. After cleaning, all was perfect again

Finally got round to removal - solenoid shaft and barrel were corroded so even though the electromagnet could pull the shaft (and release the flap) even though the spring was fine, it wasn't enough to return the shaft into the locking position. Bit odd as didn't seem to be caused by water ingress, just dissimilar metals and obviously not something which would ever get serviced and greased. All the seals were present and in fair condition.

Replaced and now working properly again.
