Front tire wear

Hello everyone
Current front Pirellis have only done approx 2000 miles thus have plenty of tread depth left, apart from the drivers front which is very heavily worn on the inner sidewall.
Car handles perfectly, steers straight and true with no drifting.
Should I be looking further into the suspension and wheel mounts or is this a simple tracking and geometry issue?
Are GT’s prone to such issues?
Is this a main dealer job, or best left to high street tire fitters?
Many thanks.

Mine did the same thing until I got the tracking done to proper settings as opposed to Maserati’s factory settings.

Depends on where you are based, but get the alignment done by an expert not a 50 quid local garage.
Think I paid £200 at Elite in Rainham a few years ago. Money well spent.

They do wear the inside edge more quickly, but 2000 miles is excessive.

As you have more wear on one side than the other this will either be because of bad geometry or worn bushes, probably the bushes.

The fix will be to have the bushes done and then a set up done by someone who knows what they are doing.

The factory Maserati tool makes sure that the bushes are correctly oriented, so best to use a specialist if you can.

Camber wrong. Just trashed two otherwise perfectly good front tyres. Down through chords on inner with more than 5mm elsewhere. Being corrected tomorrow, again

Obviously I don't know your current set up, but its normally the factory 'Toe Out' on these cars that wears the inner edge. Go for slight toe in for better wear and a more stable front end.

Thanks,Sam. No idea what the settings are. I'm just recanting what was diagnosed by the original aligners. I just expected that when it was aligned after front end refurbishment, a few months before, it was done correctly with the published settings. Concerned more that I was driving completely unaware of not only illegal tyres but dangerously ragged on the point of failure. Car taken off the road immediately.

I think I've just had the same issue as you. I had my alloys refurbished and notice my NS front tyre pressure was dropping a lot. Got my tyre's checked and they found a split on the inside, and also a bulge on the front Offside

I would strongly recommend having the bushes checked. There are different bushes at the front and rear of the wishbone, as demonstrated by our esteemed leader, Matt. The rears (I think) are doughnuts, whereas the forward ones are solid. The doughnuts are weak, and despite all being renewed 12-18 months ago, the doughnuts were dreadfully collapsed. It is recommend replacing them with solid rubber bushes all round105711

Thanks for this @montravia . My GT is a 2013 and done 52k, so the bushes are probably due to be replaced. What's the typical cost for having these replaced to solid rubber ones?

I've looked back at the MOT history, at 12,000 miles and 24,000 miles it failed on the same fault "uneven wear and bulges". Is this a problem with Pirellis? I know lots of people say ditch them for Michelin Pilot sport 4S, but are they more of a track day tire? All I need is a durable grand touring tire. Also been in touch with main dealer who told me factory settings do lead to inner side walls, which I find strange. Think I will get bushes checked first before deciding which tire to go for, please keep the advice coming.

I had similar issues with bulges on the Pirelli’s fitted to my Gransport, they do seem to suffer with this. It should be less so on the GT as the tyres sidewalls are taller and so less likely to be compressed to the point of damage. Never had an issue with the Michelins. The 4S (if you can get them) are a more sporting version, but not a track tyre. They are still fine in the rain and last very well.

Bushes are about a grand plus vat to do the tops a few hundred more to do the bottoms as well. Then you will need a geo on top at £200 plus vat. It’s not cheap but they struggle to do 20k miles so if yours have never been done will be hanging.

I ditched Pirelli quite a while ago. The pictures shown were Michelin PS4
