Formula dynamics I think

Hi just joined and I bought a 2002 spyder, looking under the dash I found this. The loom is wired into the ecm wiring loom and there are tags on the cables with like FD#20 to #82 ecm. Been looking for a wiring diagram pdf for FD but no joy. And finding what this socket with a bump on it is for. I was wondering if you use this socket if you unplug the FD box so you can still use the car, any help would be welcome.

It looks like the FD harness plug.
I'm sure there is a blanking plug for when the module isn't connected.
It's probably under the PVC tape.

Thanks if you push the catch in picture 2, you end up with a plug on the cable and a socket in the other hand with what looks like tape but is more like heat shrink, the socket has 8 pins in it with something under the heat shrink, could not find anything about a blanking socket on forums or FD site.

Take detailed pictures of what you have and email them to FD with the VIN of your car. I purchased my 04 not realizing that it already had the DBW installed but not plugged in. They were quick to respond with the necessary info.

Don’t think it’s there mate as there is a rocker switch in the centre console with no wires going to it

If you have a plug and socket, all good.
The plug will have jumper wires so the car functions normally without any of the modules plugged in.
I say modules because the main socket accommodates both the engine ecu add on, and gearbox ecu add on.
Of course if you are only fitting the gearbox ecu you don't have to splice/tap all the wires on the harness.

Thanks for the conformation.
So all I need now is the short loom with the 2 switches on and the gearbox add on. (You Tube)
I say all but they seem like rocking horse teeth second hand unless you get direct from FD

The DBWs come up for sale used now and then. You do have to send it back to FD for reprogramming however as each box is set to the cars VIN (apparently) - it will cost something like $200 plus expedited shipping... You will get a fresh wiring loom and install instructions for the pleasure of parting with your money.

Edit: the other spot to look for the module is the void to the left of the steering wheel cowl. That is where my FD ECM is located - that is installed into the plug that you have shown with the shrink wrap... You will have another connector on that FD loom which will either have (as mentioned) a blanking plug installed on the end or the FD DBW module.

Hi, so if I got hold of a second hand Fd box that was fitted originally to a spyder before would it not work on mine or is there a communication hand shake vin between the ECU and FD box that has to be programmed into the FD box for it to work.

Will have the cowls and steering wheel off soon to fit a cruise control stalk that iv'e bought so will have a good look around Thank You.

To be honest I have no idea... Since you have a loom already installed and if you manage to track down a used DBW you can find out and report back

Btw I meant the void in the dash to the left of the steering wheel following the line of the centre console.

If you want to buy a new DBW and you are in the UK you will need to go through Larini who are their agent.

It's not that smart, I doubt there is much difference between the models, if any difference at all.

They do very clearly say that if you buy second hand it needs to go back to be re-programmed. Whether anyone has tried to use a second owner box without this, I have no idea

True, but the sceptic in me thinks this is an easy $200 or so for FD.
I discovered years ago they wouldn't sell just the wiring loom alone, if you bought a second hand module with no installation loom.

I wouldn't argue with your inner sceptic.

Having just finished both a FD ECM and DBW install, I can help a bit with sorting out the wiring and options.
The FD harness does indeed handle both the ECM and DBW modules all in one harness. Follow the harness to make sure all wires are soldered in - it is possible to only solder in the ones you need for one module or the other.
The bypass connector is a smaller connector with two shorting wires inside it. I can pull my harness for a photo if needed/desired.
There should be two circular rocker switches attached to the harness, or at least two sets of two connectors that are made to connect to the switches. One is for DBW, one is for ECM.
Regarding the use of a used ECM/DBW, the FD modules do not act independent of the installed Maserati ECU and TCU, they interact with them to achieve the desired results. So, the reason they want to code your module to your VIN is to match their modules to the version number of your ECU and TCU. There are some great threads on this forum listing each TCU and ECU version number for each year and model - note that some models change version numbers mid year. In short - I'd just pay FD to make sure it's right if you pick up a used box.
If you want any pictures or assistance, I'm more than happy to assist - the harness and switches are quite easily accessible in a LH drive. I have the switches mounted on the inside of the glovebox.
