Back in the day, late seventies, by club, Bolton Wanderers entered a sponsorship deal with a local car dealers, and they all got Lada's, except Frank Worthington, the flamboyant striker, who continued to rock up in his Maserati. No idea which model, I had no interest then, wonder if I can find out? Not from poor Frank, who has dementure...
That’s much better than having dementia!

My dad was a steward at Leicester City when I was a kid and I remember him introducing me to Mr Worthington who really stood out from the other players. He was wearing a purple velvet suit and a large Fedora hat. He made quite an impression. Never knew he had a Maserati though - that really would have completed the picture.
To be fair I was told it was a Maserati, probably by non-car nuts so could have been anything sporty. Worthy is there in the pic but not wanting to be associated with a crappy Ladas he's hiding at the back in between Peter 'Nicho' Nicholson and Ray 'No nickname' Train with Garry 'Jonah' (scored at hat trick again Man City in the League cup 1972/3, day match on Tuesday cos of power cuts) Jones getting his hairstyle in the way. Garry died of cancer a year or two back.

Notice Sam 'Big Sam' Allardyce, Peter 'Reidy' Reid and Roy 'Greavo' Greaves, a rare bearded footballer in those days.

I know chav-ballers may not always be the brightest sparks but that’s the most unimaginative collection of nicknames I’ve heard!

But they are from the 70's so collectors items!

Remember when Andy Goram was diagnosed with mild schizophrenia? The Motherwell fans sang at him 'There's Only Two Andy Gorams'

Lovely stuff!

I know it’s wrong to make fun of mental illness and I will go and flagellate myself with a moist copy of the Guardian later, but that cracked m up.
