Well done great to see a risk being rewarded

I dont want to pre-emt things just yet , but im chuffed enough to have kept the original block and crank as good and in tact , the rest is just money time and patience and the skill of Ashley and the boys with a little head pointing fom me thrown in for good measure

Went down to SportsItalia today Ist visit since lockdown , (but i think we are all agreed lockdown is kinda over now ) if any one asks i was testing my eyes OK ..............anyway , Matt and Ashley both at their stations, as Matt promised head bolts were cracked ready and how they had the will power to pevent them selves from peeking i just dont know,
Within 20 minutes both heads removed. Extremely surprised to see absolutely no visible piston damage to the exposed surfaces , video's to follow ..... next we moved to the under side to expose and removed the sump plate ,

4 sets of beedy eyes scanning all the conrods and bearings , all bar one seemed true and untouched except one which was bent latterally with a slight twist .................................. subsequently removed said piston , next question was will it turn now , so we replaced the sump plate , and wound it on with 2 nuts just to prevent it from any slightest crankshaft movement ........................... low and behold it turned easily , and by the 2nd /3rd revolution its was completely turning free as a bird ................................................. i think we were all in slight disbelief
Is Pank the noise it makes when trying to compress water? ;)

What great news for all. Not only are you back in the 'brand' again, and at a bargain price... but also another lovely Maserati saved from a breakers.

Best of luck with the rebuild.

Pankl conrods are some of the best out there, +1 on Phil's comment, it prob. protected the rest of the motor. May I suggest that you have the crank checked for cracks and twist. Outstanding luck!

Watching with interest as you know Loz, I love to see engines saved and rebuilt. You seem to have listed new shells, I was going to mention them otherwise, given the Alfa situation on cam belt failure of flattening them leading to failure within 1,000 miles! Is it worth a set it small ends too?

Yes Phil 150% , I am absolutely delighted and over the moon , never before had three yoofs calling me a jammy fecker and rejoicing at it ..................definite goer and i get to keep the engine numbers in tact

And it's likely been a fair while since at least one of those yoofs had been called a yoof!

Proper job, Loz and SportsItalia. A huge collective sigh of relief.

Good skills that is a great result happy for you. I took a chance a couple of years ago when I bid on the R34 gtr from the USA govy auctions and whilst my car started after Abbey had worked their magic one of the others (there was 3 ) was seized. I still had to spend a lot on to get it back into shape but at least an engine rebuild was not required.

Hi Newton , the shells were still in really good nick and surprised all of us but will be changed regardless, small ends come complete with a new pistons I am informed , My logic says if the shells were slightly affected then potentially the small end had a chance of taking some of the remaining impact stress ,the whole impact thing can be compared to how crumple zones are designed first part takes 75% , 2nd zone takes 15% and 3rd part takes 10% and pro rata , as I said in a previous post after said piston and Conrod were removed the crank turned with relative ease by hand , which was a bit of a sigh of relief ,

A4Alfa replaced the big ends in my GT when the valve stuffed itself through the piston crown, they looked fine but Paul said that he had seen many that looked OK but they failed soon after fitting. If you think about it the amount of force to bend a conrod is going to leave some impact damage on both sets bearings so no point not replacing.

Thats exactly the reason the timing chains ae being replaced as they in theory are potenially in the crumple zone so to speak, timing gears and cogs looked fine

Just a quick minor update guys , all parts ordered and paid for yesterday , Covid restrictions means 14-18 days delivery , inaction is frustrating but its all part and parcel of these strange times we are living through , i need something to polish and caress and the mercs just dont spark that interest unfortunately

Good catch, look forward to hearing it running. You intending it as a keeper or thinking to run for a short while and then re-sell?
